This is a good
old German family planted in Fayette county by Conrad Deffenbaugh, a native of
Germany . After his emigration he settled in Eastern Pennsylvania , later
coming to Fayette county , where he married Margaret Riffle . They settled on
new land and endured all the dangers and privations of the pioneer. They had a
family of seven children.

4. THE CONRAD DEFFENBAUGH FAMILY
by Chauncey Lloyd Deffenbaugh [23 Nov
1905-27 Sept 1993] Quoted by Ralph Emerson Deffenbaugh
"The Conrad Deffenbaugh
(Tevebaugh, Tiefenbach, Diefenbach) (1749-Jan 1812) Family, German township,
Fayette Co, Pa. Spouse, Mary Magdalene Riffle (1755-22 Oct 1832). Nine
children-six boys and three girls were born to them. Conrad Deffenbaugh, a
native of Germany, along with his brother, Wilhelm (William) came to America
sometime in the 1760's. Since there is no record of their landing at the port
of Philadelphia, certain circumstances prevailing at that time lead me to
believe that they must have disembarked at Baltimore or one of the other
Maryland ports. Records show that other Deffenbaughs were living in Baltimore
at the time who might have been kinfolk. There is a record of a Conrad
Deffenbaugh taking communion at the Lutheran church in Frederick, MD in 1767.
We know they were Lutherans but have no proof of their place of origin in
Germany. (Baden has been mentioned.)
William Deffenbaugh, the brother, was
reported to have settled somewhere in western Maryland at that time. All
attempts to locate information about him or any of his descendants have been
unsuccessful to this time. (1975)
Since Conrad came to German township,
where a number of German immigrants had previously settled, it seems reasonable
for us to assume that he followed the old National Trail to reach his
destination. He eventually settled on a farm about 2? miles east, northeast of
Fort Mason (Masontown), formerly named Germantown. The time of his arrival in
this locality has never been established, or when he met and married Mary
Magdalene Riffle. We do know that their first child, Conrad, Jr., was born in
1773. (Fischer's Jacob's Lutheran Baptismal records show John, born 1793, as
the first of Conrad's children to be baptised in German twp.)
All of Conrad's family stayed with the
Lutheran Church except his second son, Jacob, who went with the Reformed group.
He donated a portion of one of his farms for a church building and cemetery, which
today is the McClellandtown United Presbyterian Church and Church Hill
Cemetery. He, his wife and several of his children are buried there. Conrad,
his wife, and many of his descendants are buried in the Jacob's Lutheran Church
cemetery.
In 1785, Conrad applied to the state of
Pennsylvania (possibly Virginia) for a land grant. He received it in 1787 for
the price of 5 pounds English which was equal to $29.60. It consisted of 145+
acres and the deed stipulated that the grant was legal provided that it did not
encroach on Indian treaty lands. It was known as "Conrad's
Fancy." The farm, or
plantation, passed from Conrad to his wife, Mary Magdalene, in 1812. Her son,
Anthony, bought out his brothers' and sisters' interests between the years 1817
and 1830. When Anthony died in 1843, the farm reverted to his wife, Susanna.
Her son, George, took it over at her death in 1884 and farmed it until May 26,
1913, when he sold it to his brother, Christian Deffenbaugh for $1.00 with the
provision that he (George) be given a home and be cared for as long as he
lived. His end came on March 8, 1916. Christian farmed it until his death on
December 18, 1922. To settle the estate, it was sold out of the family in 1923
to a coal mining company. The land was strip mined and all the buildings were
destroyed. The house and barn had been located approximately 200 yards east of
the township road now known as T-370, which connects the Masontown-Leckrone
road (PA 3013) to the Masontown-Woodside road (PA 3010) at the Mennonite Church.
A high voltage power line passes over the building site.
The Conrad Deffenbaugh family consisted
of nine children, listed in order of their birth. A) Conrad, Jr (1773-1805); B)
Jacob (1776-Dec 10, 1854); C) Catherine (1780-1866); D) Solomon (1785-1869); E)
Daniel (1786-March 13, 1867); F) Anthony, (Feb 16, 1789-Oct 2, 1843); G)
Barbara (July 1, 1792-March 15, 1827); H) (John) George (Dec 24, 1793-Dec 8,
1872); I) Magdalene (Jan 14, 1796-?) (possibly died in Texas)."

I have a Jacob
in my line that would have been born around 1720. He patented land in Fayette
Co., PA. just above the Mason Dixon Line. This part of Fayette Co., was claimed
by three states: Pa, Manoghalia, VA and West Agusta, Maryland. He had an early
Fort where early courts were held. This fort is mentioned in various histories.
However the court records burned in the 1790s fire at the courthouse in
Monongalia Co.,((now West Virginia)).
Jacob doesn't
appear to be buried at St.Jacob's Lutheran Church which has the early burials.
His Son George was born 13 May 1754 and married Elizabeth Waltzer/Walser. Jacob
also appears to have had children named: Nicholas b. 1752, Mary Magdalene,
Matthias, and a daughter said to be the d/o of Andrew M. & Abigail Riffle,
however, This child, Elizabeth Riffle/Rifel was most likely Jacob's daughter.
She died the winter of 1765-66.
Several of my
ancestors children, children of George Rifel, Sr. moved to WVA to claim lands
George was awarded for service in the Revolutionary War. Many early letters
have survived which state this. Also, some members went west and are also
recorded in these letters.
Jacob Sr. seems
to have moved out of Pa. There are many deeds and several state that he sold
his land to his son Nicholas who is buried at the Lutheran Church. Elizabeth,
George, Mary Magdalene and Nicholas are buried at St. Jacob's Lutheran Church.
They had the
following children:
2 i. Conrad,
19732, M (1773-1805)
3 ii. Jacob,

1. ÒBig JakeÓ
2. Fayette County, Pennsylvania,
Genealogical and Personal History
Jacob , son of
Conrad and Margaret (Riffle) Deffenbaugh , was born in Fayette county in 1776 .
He learned the blacksmith's trade and was one of the most expert iron workers
in the county. He made axles, chains, and other needed articles, shipping to
river points. He prospered and owned three farms of one hundred acres each. He
was a Whig in politics, and a Presbyterian in religion. He died 1854 . He
married Eva Everly , who bore him eleven children.
3. Chauncey Lloyd Deffenbaugh [23 Nov
1905-27 Sept 1993] via Debbie Harris
"Jacob must have been a big man
for he was often referred to as "Big Jake." During church services,
he was always one of the most trusted scouts to warn of danger when the Indians
were on the prowl. He was a skilled blacksmith and craftsman in making iron
products such as axles, chains, farm tools, wheel rims, etc. His products were
of the highest quality and much of them were shipped down the Monongahela River
for sale in the Pittsburgh area. His skill and excellent workmanship led to
much financial success as was proven by his ownership of three separate farms
at the same time. It was from his farm near McClellandtown that the area for
the Presbyterian Church and cemetery was obtained. He was the last active
member of the Reformed group's Council at the time it separated from the
Lutherans. He was the one who signed the papers that relinquished the Reformed
group's claim to the land donated by the Franks family for a "meeting
house" and school. Jacob was appointed to a Fayette County committee of
four to work with representatives from all the other counties of the state to
speak out to the people of Pennsylvania extolling the virtues of the American
way of carrying on business without the interference of England. [Taken from the
Uniontown paper of May 5, 1827]
The record reveals that he was a capable leader and a concerned citizen.
The parents of Jacob's wife, Nicholas and Dorothy Everly, lived on an adjoining
farm east of "Conrad's Fancy."
The other Everly children were:
Elizabeth, married to Nicholas Poundstone; Catherine, married to Michael
Baker; Margaret, married to Joseph Yeager; Barbara, married to Joseph Bowers;
Christine, married to Phillip Mason; Mary, married to Nicholas Mason; and a son
Jacob."

"Anthony bought his sisters' and

period between 1817 and 1830 for the sum of $150 each, except John George, who
received $400 because his father did not live long enough to teach him a trade
as he had done for the other boys. He stayed on at the plantation until 1817
when he and his wife moved to Perry County, Ohio, where he purchased a farm
east of Glenford. The farm was sold out of the family in the early 1920's and
was about 400 acres in size. "Since the Elder Conrad died in 1812 his wife
outlived him until 1832--about 20 years--it was the responsibility of Anthony
to care for his mother as long as she lived. Releases for their interest in the
plantation were signed by each of
Anthony's brothers and sisters. There is no record showing that the children of
Conrad, Jr. or the children of Barbara Rider received any share from
Anthony."

9. She is buried next to Josiah but there
is a problem with her tombstone which lists her birth as 1864. My best guess is that J. Ellsworth,
with whom she lived, gave the dates to the person who carved the stone and he
gave his wifeÕs birthdate instead of his motherÕs. Hattie, was in fact, born in April of 1864 which would
correspond with the date on the stone.

There is a humorous story passed down through the family about the time that
his group of soldiers got lost during the Civil War. They were very hungry and
happened to spy a bee hive in a nearby tree. They cut the hive down from the
tree and spread the honey comb on a wagon hitch. When they awoke in the
morning, they found a bear had swallowed the entire hitch trying to get all the
honey. They had bear meat for breakfast that day.

June Swaney, and their are two children, me and my sister but we're not the
one's you have listed. Here is where the confusion comes from, the night my
Father died at Uniontown Hospital, There was coincidentally another Donald
Lilley, who also died that night. I have been searching for any information on
my father's father William Thomas Lilley but I've come up with nothing, and I
keep stumbling over the Other Lilley line. I think the other Lilley line is
mostly from the Uniontown, Pa area, whereas, my Lilley's are from the Oliphant
Furnace, Pa area (which is only 5 minutes away) which again, brings in the
confusion. I'm not sure if there is a connection between the families because I
can't find anything on William Thomas Lilley, there is also confusion because
there is another Line from Smithfield, PA (5 minutes other direction!) well
I've rambled enough, just wanted to clear up that part of your tree for
you, Chris Lilley

5. Family story: #1 Homer ran away from home when he was between 10 and 12
years old after disagreement with his
parents over religion . He
supposedly traveled out west to Washington State. #2 He was one
of the youngest of 10-12 children
and his family was well-to-do.
His father
supposedly became a large landowner in the Chicago area including owning the
land where either Flossmoor Country Club or a race track was built. When he died the children supposedly fought each other over the inheritance and by the
time all the suits were over the only ones with anything were the lawyers.
2005 - We have
absolutely no idea where this story originated but both Sandie and I remember
hearing it. I wonder if this could
have actually been GrandmaÕs family as BusseÕs were wealthy landowners in the
Chicago area. Although I believe
her grandfather Fred Busse was born in Germany, he was in Addison, DuPage Co.,
IL which was a prominent Busse area.
6. Homer applied (or at least Carrie
applied as the envelope was in her handwriting) for a delayed special
registration of birth in October of 1942 under a law passed in 1941 that
allowed this. In his application
he lists his occupation as steam fitter and his residence as R. R. #2, Chicago
Heights, IL. There is an affidavit signed by John Elsworth Johnson attached
that says he is the father. There
is also an affidavit of one Elizabeth M. Honsaker who says he has known Homer
for 53 years and that she is a non-relative to the applicant. The record is
filed as #1982 of 1942 and dated October 14, 1942.
In 1917 when
Homer Newton was 27, he married Caroline Alvine Christine Busse, Grandmother,
34, F, daughter of Wilhelm Busse, 37, M (Dec 1859-~1910) & W. Emilie
ÒSophiaÓ Christine Thurnau, 2651, F (23 Oct 1864-29 Feb 1948). Born on 21 Aug

Last night in a
beautiful candle-lit floral setting, marriage lines were read in the Steger
Church for Mr. Bob Johnson and Miss Lois Hartmann. Mrs. Sarah Shelby played the wedding march and accompanied
Miss Marjorie Hartmann who sang "I love you Truly." Following the marriage cermony friends
of the bride and groom extended greetings to the young couple at the reception
held in the church parlor.
2. Lois was a talented artist and when she
was in school she used to make greeting cards and sell them for extra
money. She was offered a college
scholarship in art but was forced to decline it. She used her background in art during her career in

was born in South Chicago Heights, Ill., Oct. 4, 1921, daughter of the late

Calif., before moving to Stratford 10 years ago. She was an assistant to the advertising and news director of

of arrangements.
9. Oronoque Villager - May 1984
Losi Johnson
Marshall 1921-1984
The first we
heard of Lois was when a neighbor said, ÒThereÕs a talented woman who just
moved to Cheyenne Lane. SheÕd like
to work on the Villager.Ó Naturally we wasted no time reaching
her by phone. ÒSure,Ó she said,
ÒIÕll help. What do you want me to
do?Ó
It turned out
that Lois could do almost anything on a newspaper. She had been media director and copywriter for several
department stores and advertising agencies in New Jersey and Chicago. Recently widowed, then, back in 1975,
she moved east from California to be near her two daughters.
But her choice
for a job on the Village was layout - a spot where we desperately needed
help. And for nine years she was
layout and production chief for our village paper. One weekend each month her home was the focus of activiity
as other staff members came and went, working under her direction to pull the
issue together.
Warm
friendships were formed in the doing, because Lois had a knack of making work
seem like fun. Her quick
perception of what was right, her boundless creative ideas showed up in every
Villager, and her gay personality inspired the rest of us. For her, this was a labor of love. She gave unstintingly of her precious
time, for Lois had remarried and also had a demanding job as assistant to the advertising
and news director for the Brooks Newspaper Syndicate in Westport. But she always found time for the
Villager.
This giving of
herself in all areas of her life was perhaps her greatest talent. Ask her neighbors. Ask her many friends. Ask Tom, her husband who so generously
shared her with us. We all felt
her energy, her sensitivity to the needs of others, her caring.
The last time I
saw Lois, her concern was typically not for herselt, ÒHow is everything going
on the paper?Ó she wanted to know.
ÒItÕs not the
same without you,Ó I told her, holding her hand.
And it never
will be.
