In 1773 Ulrich Langenegger aged 69, his wife and 2 sons Jacob(19) and Ulrich Jr. (22) immigrated to the U.S. They came over on the ship "Hope" that sailed from Rotterdam with Daniel Reidas shipmaster. A tract of land containing 229 acres, lying west of the Schuylkill River in North Coventry Township in ChesterCounty was conveyed to Ulrich on April 10, 1736.  On may 17, 1749 this land was sold to John Staner.

Ulrich's son, John, had immigrated in 1727 and settled in Rapho Township in Lancaster county. In 1729 son Christian immigrated to Donegal Township, Lancaster county. When Ulrich Sr. arrived in 1733 he settled near his brother, Daniel, but it seems likely that the pull of sons in Lancaster county caused him to relocate to that area along with his son Ulrich, Jr.  Jacob (Ulrich Sr.'s youngest son) stayed in the Philadelphia area, married the widow of his first cousin, John and changed his name to Longacre. 6)Christening date from Richard Cryer in May 1998. Per Mr. Cryer the Longenecker clan is "reputed" to have settled long ago on the Neckar River in German speaking Wurttemberg. Mr. Cryer also says that Ulrich/Woolrick left Langnau in 1689 and settled in the Palatine, Gramany; imported on the galley, Hope, qualified Aug. 23, 1733, with his wife and two sons (Strassburger, Pannsylvaniea German Pioneers, Vo. 1, Pa. !Notes: Page 81 of above source # 1 states the descendants of Ulrich Jr. in Lancaster county Pa. and their descendants elsewhere generally retain the spelling as Longenecker.

!Armin Langenegger's fam hist shows his death date as 14 Nov 1757 !Page 77 of above source # 1 states that Ulrich immigrated in 1733 at age 69 with his wife and two sons, ie Jacob, age 19 and Ulrich Jr, age 22. He located on a 229 acre tract of land west of the Schuyekill River, now

in North Coventry township, Chester county, Pa. for which a warrant was issued April 10, 1736 to Ulrich Loninnacre and a deed of Ulrich Lonninacre and wife dated 17 May 1749 was executed to John Staner (now Steiner) recorded at Philadelphia in Deed Book A, vol 10 page 25. Ulrich, about

1746, after selling his lands upon the Schuylkill, went to Lancaster county with his son Ulrich. It is not known when or where he died or is buried.

!A Mr Les Bringhurst of Loquerville, Utah submitted a family group sheet for temple work for Ulrich and his family. He lists his source of information at the above referenced book on the Longenecker family. The family group sheet he submitted shows Ulrich Sr. born in Zurich, Switzerland and the sons and wife also born there. I don't see where it states that in the book, although it does make reference to them having come from there, and that Ulrich had been a book binder there.

!Page 75 and 76 of book titled ? (I goofed) showing ships passenger lists, shows Ulrich Loninacre, Ulrich Loninacre Junr. and Jacob Loninacre arriving in the USA. On 9 Aug 1826 when Catherine was 19, she married Rev Jacob Mack, 20119, M, son of Jacob Mack, 20179, M (29 Aug 1773-24 Mar 1855) & Nancy Moser, 20180, F (~1771-5 Sep 1856). Born on 3 Nov 1803 in Brown's Run, German Twp., Fayette Co., PA. Jacob died in Fulton Co., IL, on 21 Aug 1871; he was 67.

1.  It should be noted that Reverend JACOB MACK, husband of CATHERINE9 LONGANECKER, was the grandson(I think it might be Great Grandson pjm) of Alexander Mack The Tunker, founder of the Brethren Church, according to the book " Alexander Mack the Tunker, and Descendants," by Freeman Ankrum A.B. (born 1890), published by The Herald Press, Scottdale, PA, 1943.  Freeman was a minister of the Brethren Church of Masontown, Fayette County, PA, and his mother was a Leckrone-Mack. In additional information from this source, Reverend Jacob Mack and Catherine Longanecker's son, Joseph, is indicated as "an active member of the Brethren Church from his earliest years." From this information, it would appear that the Daughters of the American Revolution were not correct in indicating Reverend Jacob Mack as a Baptist minister in their work on " Family Records from the Scrap Book of Jacob Mack" after 1870, following Reverend Mack's death.  With this information from the Brethren Church, everything seems to indicate that Jacob Mack was a Brethren minister, following in the line of his grandfather, the founder.

JOSEPH RENSHAW, d  Mar 4, 1841, 25y, 24 d.

"Joseph's stone is very unusual in that it is standing on legs much like

a table top.  There is evidence of two other stones of this design in

the cemetery, however, the Joseph Renshaw stone is the only one still

standing on the legs as of this writing in 1992. Inscription on top of

stone is as follows:

Sacred to the memory of Joseph Renshaw who departed this life March 4,

1841 age 25 years, 24 days.  Mr. R came to his death by a wound received

in his forehead from a threshing machine while feeding it.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense

but trust him for His Grace

Behind a frowning Providence

He hides a smiling face."

(Note:  This Society is in Masontown, PA, which is not indicated on the

document.)

NOTE:  Some possible descrepancies must be checked and determined.  In

the Fairview Church of the Brethren, a Joseph L Renshaw is buried near

Samuel and Maria Longanecker Renshaw.  This Joseph's date of death is

listed as July 15, 1866, age 28y, 9m, 29d. It is likely that this Joseph

was a grandson of Samuel and Maria Renshaw.  Two other children, William

and Sarah, who died at ages 15 and 18 respectively, also are buried

there. In addition, some sources have listed Arminta as having married a

Honsaker, which is not indicated on her tombstone.  Burial places for

three other children (Frances, Jacob, and John) have not been determined

yet (Aug 2005).  Frances is reported to have married a Ross.

They had one child:

He owned a farm of one hundred and ten acres in Nicholson township and rented adjoining land in order to provide for his fifteen children. In the winter he dug coal which he sold for one cent per bushel. He was a leading member of the German Baptist church, never missing a Sunday service if able to attend. He was a strong Democrat and espoused the cause of that party with all his great energy. He was the son of Joseph (1) Longanecker , who married (first) Mary Lecrone , (second) Sarah , daughter of Jacob Mack.

Background:

This obituary was received in typed form from my great aunt, Mary Myrtle Longanecker Burner, who was the granddaughter of Joseph (2) and Mary Annetta Barber Longanecker.  The newspaper source is not known, but it most likely was from Uniontown, Fayette County, PA.  Mary was the

daughter of Joseph (3) and Rachel Skiles Longanecker.  Joseph (3) was the brother of John H. Longanecker who married Sarah Ellen Norman.

Obituary for Joseph (2) LONGANECKER (as written):

Joseph Longanecker, an old time Democrat and highly respected and influential citizen of Nicholson Twp. died at his home near Geneva Friday, July 2, 1880, aged sixty-three years, five months and one day. Deceased was among the most intelligent and prosperous farmers in Fayette County, and enjoyed the confidence of the public in a high degree.  He was the head of a family of 17 persons, and the father of 15 children, all but one of whom survive.  One daughter, Mrs. Mary Smith,

died a few years ago and his wife followed March 4, 1879 leaving the following survivors of this remarkable family.  Miss Annie and David Longanecker who reside at the old homestead.  Mrs. Mary Rider, of German Twp., Mrs. Jacob Lewellen, Greene County, Mrs. A.M. Franks, Mrs. Jacob

Johnson, Mrs. Wm. Fast, Mrs. David Durr and John Longanecker, Nicholson Twp., Mrs. Archibald Skiles, German Twp., James Quinter and Jacob and Reason B. Longanecker, Livingston County, Illinois,  and Joseph Longanecker, Springfield.  Deceased had two brothers, John and Jacob and

five sisters, Mrs. Jacob Mack and Mrs. Samuel Renshaw, both deceased; Mrs. John Riley, Mrs. Joseph Moser and Mrs. Zachariah Ball.  His youngest child is 22 years old, and he lived to see 41 grandchildren, some of whom are grown up.  The funeral services took place at the late residence of deceased, and the religious services were conducted by Rev. J. I. Cover, after which the remains were borne to and deposited in the Fairview Church Cemetery, the same township, followed by the largest concourse of people ever before witnessed at a funeral in that section.

The procession was one and a half miles in length, and occupied 23 minutes in passing a given point. The cortege consisted of 310 persons, 28 spring wagons, 47 buggies, and 190 horsemen.

Wiley, 1889, p510

Dr William A Longnecker of German-Irish descent and physician of Fairchance, was born near Masontown, German township, Fayette county, Penna, April 19, 1849, and is a son of Jacob F Longanecker and Matilda Moser Longanecker. He is descended from the well known, industrious and

highly respected Longanecker family of Lancaster county, Penna. His grandfather, Joseph Longanecker, came from Lancaster county to German township in early manhood. He was strictly honest and well respected, and accumulated a large amount of property during his lifetime

and at his death each of his eight children received a valuable farm. One of his sons, Jacob Longanecker, the father of Dr William A Longanecker, was born June 17, 1818, and died April 7, 1889. He was a farmer and stockdealer, owing and residing until 1882 upon the farm of

212 acres where he was born and reared. In 1882 he bought a farm of one hundred acres adjacent to Smithfield where he resided till February 19, 1889, when he removed to Fairchance and died two months later.

Jacob F Longanecker was a republican and was held in such high respect as a private citizen and a capable businessman that he was elected county commissioner in 1855 when Fayette county was strongly democrat. His management of the county affairs was so acceptable to the people that

many of them solicited him to offer for sheriff, but he declined to make the race. He was a faithful member of the German Baptist church and a member of the Masonic order. He was married February 24, 1842, to Matilda Moser. They had three children, two daughter, Mary Ann Longanecker and Elmira Longanecker, both dead; and William A Longanecker. Mrs Longanecker was born January 5, 1819, and is a daughter of Daniel and Susanna Moser. Dr Longanecker was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools and Waynesburg College. Leaving college he received a professional certificate from County Superintendent Joshua V Gibbons and taught six

terms in the common schools. In 1871 he began the study of medicine with Dr G W Neff of Masontown. In 1874 he attended lectures at Jefferson Medical College and graduated March 10, 1876. On April 4, 1876, he formed a partnership with Dr H B Mathiot of Smithfield with whom he continued till 1886. In 1880 he removed to Fairchance where he is engaged in successful practice.

On October 19, 1882, he was married to Miss Ida F Mathiot, daughter of Dr H B Mathiot. Their union has been blessed with two children: Ellen D Longanecker, born March 10, 1887; and Carrie M Longanecker, born August 3, 1889. In politics he is a republican and has served as school director of Georges township. In 1870 he served as assistant census marshall and took the census of German, Nicholson, Georges and Springhill townships. He is an active worker in the Presbyterian church while his wife is an earnest member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Dr Longanecker in 1882 erected his present fine residence at Fairchance and is enjoying an extensive and lucrative practice.

5.  Family story:  #1 Homer ran away from home when he was between 10 and 12 years old after disagreement with his  parents over religion .  He supposedly traveled out west to Washington State.  #2  He was one of the youngest  of 10-12 children and his family was well-to-do.

His father supposedly became a large landowner in the Chicago area including owning the land where either Flossmoor Country Club or a race track was built.  When he died the children  supposedly fought each  other over the inheritance and by the time all the suits were over the only ones with anything were the lawyers.

2005 - We have absolutely no idea where this story originated but both Sandie and I remember hearing it.  I wonder if this could have actually been GrandmaÕs family as BusseÕs were wealthy landowners in the Chicago area.  Although I believe her grandfather Fred Busse was born in Germany, he was in Addison, DuPage Co., IL which was a prominent Busse area.

6.  Homer applied (or at least Carrie applied as the envelope was in her handwriting) for a delayed special registration of birth in October of 1942 under a law passed in 1941 that allowed this.  In his application he lists his occupation as steam fitter and his residence as R. R. #2, Chicago Heights, IL. There is an affidavit signed by John Elsworth Johnson attached that says he is the father.  There is also an affidavit of one Elizabeth M. Honsaker who says he has known Homer for 53 years and that she is a non-relative to the applicant. The record is filed as #1982 of 1942 and dated October 14, 1942.

In 1917 when Homer Newton was 27, he married Caroline Alvine Christine Busse, Grandmother, 34, F, daughter of Wilhelm Busse, 37, M (Dec 1859-~1911) & W. Emilie ÒSophiaÓ Christine Thurnau, 2651, F (Oct 1864-29 Feb 1948). Born on 21 Aug 1889 in Eagle Lake, Will Co., IL. Christened in St. Johns, Eagle Lake, IL. Caroline Alvine Christine died in Harvey, Cook Co., IL, on 7 Jul 1970; she was 80. Buried on 9 Jul 1970 in Cedar Park Cemetery, Calumet Park, IL.
