Descendants of Blake CARLTON

Fourth Generation

30. Grisham DURHAM (Mary CARLTON , John , Blake ) was born in 1790. He died in 1856 in Lawrence Arkansas.

Grisham Durham and family moved to DeKalb and then to Carroll County, GA.
In 1842, he went to Lawrence Co, ARK, with most of his children. Mary
Durham (1819-1854), a daughter of Grisham, married William Washington
Merrell and stayed in Carroll Co, GA. Their daughter, Sarah Rebecca
Merrell married J.C.C. Carlton of Palmetto, GA, from the line of Blake
Carlton of Greenville Co, SC, and they were the great-grandparents of
Robert Davidson who supplied much of the information on the early
CARLTON/CALTON lines and all of the information on the DURHAM line.

Grisham married Catherine WESTMORELAND.

They had the following children:

+ 72 F i Mary DURHAM

31. John CARLTON (John II , John , Blake ) was born in 1792 in Surry Co. North Carolina. He died in 1871 in Winchester, Scott Co, Illinois.

Notes
According to Robert Davidson,

John "...and his family moved from Surry to Scott County, Illinois about
1841, where there are many descendants."

The following is from information compiled and supplied by Robert
Davidson:

John "Buck" Carlton and family, with grown children, took part in a large
migration of families from North Carolina to Scott County, Illinois, in
the spring of 1841--including the Longs, Welches, Summers, Hoots and
Vestals. All were old Surry County families, interrelated by marriage.
Public domain land was available in western Illinois, and John and his
son Elijah Carlton both applied for farmland on arriving in Illinois. The
families settled in the Alsey community, near Manchester, Illinois, where
there are many descendants today. In 1860, John is listed as a "retired
farmer," living with
his second wife.

"...Some information on descendants in "Jacksonville (Ill.) Area
Genealogical Journal,"
September 1979."

"...There were other children, one perhaps the ROSANNA CARLTON
(1835-1907), who
married, January 2, 1851, WILEY JACKSON."

The following is from information compiled by Vivian Carlton Harding of
Hemet, GA., and supplied, with additional notes, by Robert Davidson of
Eastford, CT.:

Family tradition and information was preserved by Mathias Hoots, a
grandson of Elijah Carlton, writing in 1939. Bear in mind that
Grandfather Elijah died when Matt Hoots was a boy of thirteen or
fourteen, so he is recalling conversations which had taken place some
sixty years earlier.

"The first Carlton to come to Scott County, and the only one, as we have
any data, was John Carlton and his wife Lettie, his eldest son, Elijah
and his wife Nancy, their children Theophilus C. and Rebecca Caroline (my
mother) who was at that time one year old. Together with the rest of John
and Lettie's children above emigrated to Illinois, and I think all the
other children were yet unmarried. The year was 1841. My mother Rebecca
Caroline was married to Mathias Hoots in 1861. To this union were born
five children, all have deceased, except this writer who is in his 73rd
year as I
write this, hoping it will be passed down through the years...

MY ANCESTORS, BY ELIJAH CARLTON THE SECOND
My original ancestor in America was Richard Carlton who emigrated from
Scotland in the 1730's (Colonial days), came to Virginia and later to
North Carolina. His son James was my great-grandfather. And to James was
born John Carlton, my grandfather, and he was born in 1760, and with his
older brother David joined the Army of the Revoloutionary War in North
Carolina.

After the war was over, John Carlton married a girl named Anna who lived
across the state line in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, where they
both lived for a time and later moved into Surry County, North Carolina
near the place of his birth and where they both died about the year 1837
or 1838, which was soon after my marriage to Nancy Long and where we were
living in the same community.

To the soldier, John Carlton and his wife Anna, were born four sons,
Thomas, Joel, John II (who was my father, and was known as 'Johnny Buck'
Carlton) and Bloom Carlton, on dates approximately and respectively 1785,
1789, 1795 and 1800.

Me and my wife Nancy lived in Surry County, North Carolina from the time
of our marriage in October 1836 until the spring of 1841, on land very
near where my forefathers had lived, and where was born to us, Theophilus
Christian Carlton and Rebecca Caroline Carlton (Later Hoots), and in 1841
in company with my father and mother (Johnny Buck and his wife, my mother
Lettice Morefield Carlton) and a number of relatives, we left North
Carolina and emigrated to Illinois, where my father and mother died, and
we are now living.

My mother, Lettice Morefield Carlton died here in Scott County, Illinois
and was buried in the Carlton Cemetary and has a tombstone at her grave
which reads "Lettice Carlton Born Jan 1800, died Dec 27, 1852."

My father, John Carlton II died in 1871 and was buried in the same
cemetary by the side of my mother. There is no tombstone at his grave.

I am the oldest of my parents' family. The others are Mary, Lydia,
Lucinda, William, Annise, John III, George and Faney.

The children of myself and wife Nancy are Theophilus, Rebecca Caroline,
Eliza, Ann, Isaiah, William III, Emaline, Louise and Francis.

The above is an accumulated statement of family tradition from Elijah
Carlton to his grandson Mathias Hoots, Jr., as narrated to him, and is
not a signed or sworn statement, but is accurately given above as I well
remember it given to me, and is true as to his statement regarding names,
dates, places and all other matters relative to the Carlton family of
which I am a branch.

(Signed) Mathias Hoots, Jr.
Justice of the Peace (1939)

The following are notes on the above information by Robert Davidson:

In other papers Matt Hoots notes that his ancestor Richard Carlton made
application for land in the western part of North Carolina in 1739, and
that John Carlton (his grandfather) was in the 10th Regiment NC,
Revoloution. He also mentions that the family seems to have lived at one
time--the reference is unclear--in Craven County NC. This indicates that
he had done research, because of the 1739 land grant and the
Revoloutionary service are both of record in the massive "Colonial and
State
Records of North Carolina."

There are errors in Matt Hoots' documents, but it is most interesting
because in a general sense, it helps to confirm what has been suggested
in other family traditions, and in the surviving records which have been
located.

The tradition in the Carlton family of Craven County NC is that Richard
Carlton was the immigrant and he came over from Scotland in the 1730's
and stopped in Pennsylvania. Here we have him stopping in Virginia--which
all evidence suggests. The fact that Elijah Carlton even knew the name
"Richard Carlton" further suggests that the Carltons of Craven County
and those of Surry County were close relatives. But this Richard stayed
in Craven County (the proven location of the 1739 land grant)
and he cannot be a direct ancestor of the group in Surry County--probably
a close cousin. The David Carlton who served
in the 10th Regiment, Revoloution is a member of his family, and his
pension papers show that he lived in Duplin, not Surry County. No
reference has ever been found to a "James" Carlton in any of the Craven
County or Surry County records.

But Elijah's reference to his grandfather, a John Carlton, born in 1760,
who married a girl named Anna from Spartanburg County SC, falls into
place with what we know from the records. There is a John Carlton (John
Carlton II), born about 1760, who could easily have moved for a brief
time to Spartanburg County--as others in the family did--and then
returned to Surry County. Elijah knew his grandparents--they were living
at the time of his marriage--and there is no reason to doubt his memory
here. The census records of John Carlton II do not indicate four sons,
however. These are often in error, but the best evidence to date suggests
that Joel and Bloom Carlton belong
elsewhere.

The references to Elijah's immediate family and to his fathers' almost
all check out. There is a simple error in Matt Hoots' notes that all of
Elijah's brothers and sisters were unmarried at the time of the migration
to Illinois--Mary Carlton married George Long before they left NC.

Joel and Julia (Bailey) Calton
Joel and Julia came to Mo. c.a. 1840. Julia having her church letter
dated 1839. The 1840 Barry Co. Census shows them there with 3 boys and 2
girls still in the home. The next account finds Julia in Wright Co. in
1850 with Eunice and Samuel with her. Evidently they had come to Laclede
Co. in the early part of the 1840's as family information shows Joel to
be buried in the little Brush Creek Cemetery on PP hiway in Laclede Co.
Noah, his son had evidently lived near there as Noah's first wife, Mary
Brake and several babies are also buried there. All the family
information on Joel and
Julia is not available. The children we can document are 1. Morgan 2.
Samuel 3. Noah 4. Eunice. In recent weeks we have found another girl that
could very well be a daughter of Joel and Julia. Sarah Calton born 1812

Page 19 of the same Family History is a bit more specific about where
Joel and his wife are buried. It indicates that Joel is buried in a
cemetary on the Frank Hill farm on Brush Creek in Laclede County
Missouri.

The Hammond Atlas shows a town named Brush Creek in western Laclede
County.

Joel was born in Virginia, but around 1775 moved to Surry County, North
Carolina.

He was bondsman for the marriage of Elijah Calton's son, Micajah, to Mary
Taylor in 1810.

In 1816, Joel bought 100 acres on Cranberry Creek from his father

Robert Davidson has this to say about Joel and Julia:

"Three Carltons left North Carolina before 1830, and went to the
Giles-Lincoln County, Tennessee area and then settled in Missouri. Two
were brothers, sons of Lindsey Carlton Sr of Surry County..."

"This family first settled in Giles County, Tennessee, and were there for
about twenty years before moving to Barry Co, Missouri in 1839. 1830
census shows 10 children..."

"There was a Thomas H Calton (possibly CALLON) in Licoln Co, TN, in
1830--also a James Calton. These not traced, but could be members of the
Lindsey Carlton family."

Joel married Julia BAILEY. Julia was born about 1783 in Pennsylvania. She died in 1883 in Wright county, Missouri.

Some sources give death as LaClede county, Missouri

Joel and Julia had the following children:

  98 F i Betsy CALTON
        Betsy married ? SCOTT.
99 M ii Browning CALTON was born about 1820.
100 F iii Margaret CALTON was born in 1818.

+ 101 F iv Sarah Jane CALTON
+ 102 M v Morgan CALTON
+ 103 M vi Samuel CALTON
+ 104 M vii Noah Ephram , Sr. CALTON
+ 105 F viii Eunice Ann CALTON

38. Mary CALTON (Lindsey , John , Blake ) was born on 18 Jul 1793. She died on 29 Jan 1870 in Daviess Co, Missouri.

Mary married Peter DOWELL in 1823 in Surry county, North Carolina.

Some reports give the name of Peter Dowell as Peter McDowell

Peter and Mary had the following children:

106 M i Lindsey Carlton DOWELL was born in 1828. He died in 1901.

39. George CALTON (Lindsey , John , Blake ) was born in 1794 in Surry Co. Virginia. He died in Jan 1850 in Wright county, Missouri.

The following information was researched and supplied by Robert Davidson
of Eastford, CT.:

"There is said to be a marriage record of George Carlton to Mary Bone,
1797, in Surry Co NC.
This would seem to fit here. George Carlton was in Spartanburg County SC
in 1800, and in his household were an older man and woman, both over
45--probably John and Agatha Carlton from Surry Co, NC. In 1810, George
Carlton and John Carlton are given in separate households, next to each
other, obviously related, but perhaps not father and son. In 1824 George
Carlton was in Sullivan Co, Tennessee. Census records also show seven
sons and two daughters born between 1795-1820. Some of these died young.
There is no certain record of the family found, but Blake and Frederick,
when grown, were neighbors of George and Mary and must be sons. Mack
Carlton of Scott Co, VA lived only a few miles away, over the state line,
and census records (twice) show him born in SC, and therefore place him
with this family. All the other Carltons in
the area are from Surry Co, NC."

40. Lindsey , Jr. CALTON (Lindsey , John , Blake ) was born in 1799 in Surry county, North Carolina. He died about 1843 in Surry county, North Carolina.

Notes
Lindsey Jr. came to MO. from TN. in the late 1830's. He is first found in
the 1840 Pulaski County census.
In the 1840 census of Pulaski County, MO. the family of Lindsay Calton is
found. At this time, Laclede and Wright counties were part of Pulaski
County. Lindsay then is found in the 1850 census of Laclede County MO.
Lindsay is not found in the
1860 census but is next found in the 1870 census of Barry County, MO. It
is supposed that his first wife had died and he has remarried and has
children by this marriage. His oldest children were born in Tennessee.
One child was born in Illinois and the
rest in Missouri.

In the 1870 census of Barry County, MO. King Prairie Township:
Lindsay Calton Age 70 Born in NC.
Elizabeth " " 38 " " IN.
Levi " " 13 " " MO.
Mary " " 12 " " "

In the 1880 Census of Lawrence County, MO:
Gracy Calton Age 51 Born in IN.
Henry G. " " 13 " " MO.
Joel G. " " 9 " " "

Lindsay evidently has died between 1870 and 1880. Gracy must be the same
person as Elizabeth in the 1870 census of Barry County MO.

It is not sure if Lindsay Jr. was born in 1799 and 1800.

In the 1870 Census of Barry County, MO. a Franklin Calton (probably son
of Lindsay and first wife) and Remelia Newton (perhaps mother of
Elizabeth) living with Lindsay Calton family.

Lindsay's daughter, Mary, married a Baptist preacher, his last name was
Sanders.

Lindsay's grandson, William (Levi's son) was also a Baptist preacher.
