This is an account that was typed by Frankie Garner, who had collected genealogy information about the Garner & Shockley families.

Short family history written by the former Etta Shockley. Etta has passed away since writing this. She was found dead in her bed. I am copying it as near word for word as I can make out. If anyone can add more to this record, or prove some of it is wrong, we would appreciate it if you would get in touch with any of the Earl Garner family.

My dad, Charles Austin Shockley. His father's name was Carol (and I think Monroe). Dad had one brother, Monroe Shockley. Grandpa Shockley died when Uncle Roe was young. Mama and Dad finished raising him. He wouldn't go to school, so he never learned to read and write. Dad had a sister by the name of Jane. She married a man by the name of George Coffman. She had another man by the name of Appleton. Our Grandma Shockley's name was Sarah Jane. She was a McGinnis. Aunt Jane had a daughter by the name of Wease. Must have been short of Louise. Aunt Susie Perkins Girlt raised her. Aunt Susie's name before she married was Perkins, Susie Perkins. Dad has a half brother named Bill - Uncle Bill Shockley, Hady's father, and a daughter named Della and one named Looney (I find in other documents that her name was Leona) Jones. Dad, Uncle Roe, and Aunt Jane were all own brothers and sisters. Grandpa Shockley's third marriage was to Mandy Hankins. Aunt Ida was the only child of Grandpa and Mandy Hankins. She was Dad's half sister. Mandy Hankins had three children when Grandpa married her. They were Bill Hankins, Mollie Hankins and Effie Ussery. Aunt Susie Girlt is his half or step sister. Her name was Susie Perkins before she was married and Girlt afterward. She raised Wease after Aunt Jane died. I have an enlarged picture of Grandpa Shockley and one of Aunt Jane. Aunt Susie insisted I bring them back with me. I went home with Grandma Noland and Aunt Lucy a while before I was married. Me and Gladys Cline stayed all night with Uncle Bill and Aunt Susie. I also visited Uncle Bill Shockley and Hady Shockley, Opal Thomas's dad and I also saw Della. Hady had two girls, Opal Thomas and Lucille (I don't know her married name). Pauline and I ate dinner with Opal Thomas. When we were down there Lucille and her husband were there. There was Uncle Hade Shockley, Elzer's dad. I think he was a brother to Grandpa Shockley. Hady and Mary Lou. They had several children, Charley (called Little Charley), Bill ( saw him the last time I was there), Mary, Lizzie, Elzer, Mamie and Mattie. Most of them still live down in Camden County. Elzer is dead. Uncle Roe wife, Aunt Pearl, was a sister to Rosa's husband, Fred. They had three children, Bill, Edith, and Floyd. All are dead but Bill, he still lives at Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I guess you knew Dad and all of us (I was the baby then) went to Oklahoma in a covered wagon in 1906. I was three years old, had my birthday on the trip. It took 21 days. We stopped in what was called then old Oklahoma. Oklahoma wasn't a state then, it was called a territory. We lived there a year or more and moved on to what then was called Now (?), Oklahoma. We stayed two years there. Dan was born then - out near Tuttle, Oklahoma. We decided to come back to Missouri. Rosa married Fred Garner and stayed in Oklahoma. We came back on the train to Camden County, Missouri. I went to school my first year in Camden County at the Pearson Branch School. It is now in the Lake of the Ozarks. Everett, Walter and I went one term there then Dad moved to Dallas County near Buffalo, Missouri.

After one year there Dad decided to go back to Oklahoma in a covered wagon and got as far as Bentonville, Arkansas. Mother got awful sick. He turned around and went back to Buffalo. Uncle Jim Belt and Aunt Milly lived in the country near Buffalo. We stayed. He rented a farm and farmed near Flint Ridge School where we went to a subscription school. That was a three months term of school and the parents paid 1 dollar a month per pupil. Near charity. Just a store and post office.

We were again on the move in the fall. After it began to get cold in covered wagon, we started for Hodge, Missouri with a cow tied to the back of the wagon. We froze out or us kids did. We cried we were so cold. Dad put mother, Walter, and me and Dan on the train at Lincoln, Missouri. We spent most of the night in the depot in Sedalia, Missouri. At 2 o'clock we got a train out. Had to change at Myrich, Missouri. When we got to Hodge it was awful cold. I was sick from riding on the train. No one to meet us. We went to Walter's store. Finally Bob Register had some men help him unload a scalding tub and he took us to Uncle Jim Belt's in a big wagon. Dad and Everett made it there about three days later. We lived in and around Hodge for several years. Dad and Everett went to Kansas City. We sold all our belongings. They were to get a job of some kind of road work. In about ten days they came back. We rented a little farm for another year and then we moved to Corder, Missouri. Dad hauled coal there that winter for a living. Before the winter was over, we moved back near Hodge. Farmed and cut wood for a couple of years, then we moved on a farm out on the prairie near Corder. Lived there two years. That was when World War I started. We moved back to Hodge on the Ed Edwards place. We lived there about 2 years. Everett was in Oklahoma. Dad sold most of our stuff. Chartered a railroad car and back to Oklahoma again. I was 15 years old. We bought a man out on the farm about 15 miles from Blanchard, Oklahoma. Bought team of horses, cows, Chickens, the works and tried to farm. Had 60 acres of cotton besides caffee corn as they called it. Turned dry, hot winds blew in a week. We scarcely had any crops at all. We all had the flu that winter, all but Dad and Walter and in the meantime the man Dad bought out hadn't paid the rent and the sheriff garnisheed the feed, so Dad had a sale and moved up by Tuttle on a cattle ranch. He and Walter worked by the month until we had money enough to get back to Missouri. In the meantime Everett was back at Hodge working on the railroad. He rented the farm back out by Corder. We lived down by Hodge that winter - picked apples and cut wood. We moved in the spring to the Bell place out toward Corder and Grandpa Noland died. Mother and Dad went back down there. We lived there two years and then we moved to the Owens place west of Hodge.
