Mary and Ruf met at a USO dance in Seattle. It was love at first sight, and they married three weeks after they met. Several months later, the navy transferred Ruf to a remote base in the Aleutian Islands to defend our country. The base was bachelor quarters only, and Mary went back to live with her mother. The base was bombed, and all were presumed dead. Mary had a nervous breakdown when she received the news.

Ruf managed to salvage enough equipment to build a sending-only radio, and the handful of survivors were eventually rescued. Ruf's military career took him to almost every country in the world and lasted 16 years. He was discharged with rank of chief petty officer. He then began a second career with the CAA and was trained to oversee the weather stations in Upper Michigan.

Mary and Ruf adored children, but had none of their own. They opened and supervised youth centers everywhere they went, mostly just teaching children to dance. They were affectionately called "Aunt" and "Uncle" by everyone who knew them. Mary and Ruf were members of the VFW and both served several terms as president of their local branches. They retired to Tennessee in 1959.
