Carrie was small and vivacious and in many ways ahead of her time. She threw open her bedroom window every morning when she got up, summer and winter, and did strenuous calisthenics in her nightgown. She also shocked the community by taking a dip in the ocean every day. Everything new was a great challenge and exciting experience. Carrie studied nursing at the Maine General Hospital in Portland and was head nurse there when she met John. [ref 8]
