27 Aug 1733 Richard Hussey appeared in probate court at Portsmouth to complain some of the household goods in his father's estate had been removed and that he suspected his sister Jane, along with Samuel Styles of Somersworth and William Styles of Rochester "to be Guilty of Carrying them away." William Styles was later dropped from the complaint, but on September 10, 1733 the constable delivered a citation ordering "Samuel Stiles and his wife to appear." Joseph Varnum and Elizabeth Hussey Varnum, sister of Jane Hussey Styles, were summoned to appear as witnesses. In the face of the disapproving judge and relatives Jane Hussey Styles "own'd she took a feather bed and Coverlid, a Bolster and One Pillow, and two old Puter pots, and one bible and one blanket." The judge ordered Jane Hussey Styles to show the items to the appraisers and her husband to pay the court costs.
