Josiah Chase became its first ordained minister, 19 Sept. 1750. He was born at Newbury, Mass., 20 Nov. 1713, and graduated at Harvard in 1738. Having attended a wedding, 26 Dec. 1778, he missed his way in a snow storm, fell into the Creek near his home and was drowned. His body was recovered the following morning. Rev. Josiah Chase, born at Newbury, Mass., 20 Nov. 1713, died 26 Dec. 1778. His wife Sarah died 23 Oct. 1799. Children were: Bradstreet, Josiah, Thomas, John, Cotton, Simon, Sally. [ref 33:194,318] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1738 graduated Harvard; 19 Sep 1750 ordained at Spruce Creek parish, Kittery Josiah's ministry was undistinguished. Family legend has it that his faith was "literal and childlike." It is said that one day, while preaching a sermon, he had a premonition that a shoal of fish was entering the creek nearby; all the men of the congregation went down to the water and were able to make a big catch. He was known for his rum drinking - about a quart a day. Protestants did not begin to consider drinking a sin and to call for abolition of alcoholic beverages until the early nineteenth century. He died as a result of falling into a creek while walking home in a snowstorm after attending a wedding. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ||||||||||
