Notes for William Franklin MANNING | ||||||||||
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - William Franklin, b. 1832, Nov. 4; d. unm. 1862, Jan. 1. He went to California in the early rush to the gold-fields, by way of Cape Horn. The vessel was 6 months on the voyage, and provisions giving out, those aboard were obliged to eat horseflesh. On his return to the East he was bookkeeper in Boston until ill health led him to make a sea voyage on a vessel. He was away three years, and was on the return voyage when he was killed by the fall of a spar ("in the Bay of Hindostan," says one account).
