Moses, son of Aquila (2) Chase, was born December 24, 1663, died September 6, 1743. He settled in Sutton, New Hampshire, on the tract of land one hundred rods above Bridge street, on the north side of the main road, and this farm was at his death divided between his sons, Moses and Joseph. He married (first) November 10, 1684, Ann Follansbee, who died April 5*, 1708, in childbed. and was buried at Newbury. He married (second) December 13, 1713, Sarah Jacobs, of Ipswich. Children: Moses, Daniel, Moses, Samuel, Elizabeth, Stephen, Hannah, Joseph, Benoni. [ref 29:1675]

A photograph of her tombstone is given in the "Proceedings of the First Meeting of the Chase--Chace Family Association"; supposed to be the oldest Chase tombstone in existence.; 2d, Dec. 13, 1713, Sarah Jacobs, of Ipswich. An Ann Chase adm. NE. chh. 1698. He d. 1743; bur. at W. Nb. Will July 3, 1740; Sep. 19, 1743; grandson Seth4 Chase ment., but no wife. Moses Chase, son of Aquila and Anne (Wheeler) Chase, was born in Newbury on December 24, 1663. He married (1) in Newbury on November 10, 1684, Anne Follansbee, and (2) December 13, 1713, Sarah Jacob, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Brown) Jacob of Ipswich, who died in Newbury on March 13, 1739, aged 62. Chase settled in 1689 in the "upper woods," now West Newbury, where he and his wife were admitted to the Second Church in 1713. He was a weaver by trade. He saw service against the Indians under Lieut. Caleb Moody in 1708, and was ensign under Capt. Hugh March 1704-1710. He made his will July 3, 1740, and it was probated September 19, 1743. The gravestones of Moses Chase and his second wife stand in the Ferry Lane graveyard in West Newbury. [ref 46:2-593]

Ensign Moses Chase, eleventh and youngest child of Aquilla and Ann (Wheeler) Chase, was born at Newbury, Massachusetts, December 24, 1663. He married and settled in what is now West Newbury, on the main road about one hundred rods above the present Bridge street. A large majority of the Chases of the United States are siad to be his descendants. He married (first) Ann Follansbee. He married (second) December 13, 1713, Sarah Jacobs of Ipswich. His will, bearing date July 3, 1740, mentions his grandson but does not mention his wife, from which it is inferred that he also survived his second wife. Children: Moses, Daniel, Moses, Samuel. Elizabeth, Stephen, Hannah, Joseph, Benoni. [ref 61:955]

1689 first Chase to settle the "Upper Woods" as the territory above the Artichoke river was then called; acquired a farm of 100 acres, fronting 106 rods on the "Bradford Road" and extending back to the Merrimac River

1700 Sep 20: "granted to Moses Chase to set in the fore seat by the pulpit"

1704 and 1710 Ensign of Capt. Hugh March's Company of snow-shoe men, North Regiment in Essex County; 1708 Aug 11: muster roll of Lt. Caleb Moody in his Company in Her Majesty's service in the woods between Amesbury and "Jamaco" [now Merrimac]; one of thirty-four soldiers who received power and bullets under command of Lt. Moody prior to 17 August 1708.

1713 admitted to membership in the Second Church

1718 May 13: granted liberty to use the flats near Holt's rocks on condition that they give one salmon per year to Rev. Christopher Toppan, pastor of the First Church and one to Rev. John Tufts, pastor of the Second Church of Newbury, "if they catch them"

WILL of MOSES CHASE, 3 Jul 1740 - 19 Sep 1743: In the name of God Amen I Moses Chase of Newbury in the county of Essex in the Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England being sensible of my own mortality and that it is necessary for me to settle my estate for the Peace of my Children and being at present through the goodness of god to me of good memory and disposing mind Do make and establish these presents to be my last will and Testament. First committing my soul to God who gave it and my body to the earth whence its original was taken, by a decent burial with a good hope thro the merits of Christ of having a happy and a glorious resurrection. And as to the good things of this world which it hath pleased God of his great goodness to make me the owner of I dispose of them in the manner following viz.

Imprimis To my son Daniel his Heirs or Assigns I give and Bequeath forty pounds money or in good Bills of Credit to be paid by my executors, one half thereof within one year after my Decease and the other half within two years after my Decease; that is to say my son Moses whom I have hereafter appointed one of my executors, to pay my said son Daniel ten pounds within one year after my Decease and Ten pounds more within two years after my Decease so as to make the sum of twenty pounds and my son Joseph whom I have hereafter appointed one of my executors to pay to my said son Daniel the sum of ten pounds within one year after my Decease and ten pounds more within two years after my Decease so as to make the sum of twenty pounds. The other part of my said son Daniel's Portion being secured to him by Deed.

Item To my son Samuel his heirs or Assigns I give and Bequeath twenty shillings as money to be paid in equal proportion by my executors the other part of his Portion being secured to him by Deed which I do hereby ratified and confirm unto him and his heirs and assigns forever: on the considerations mentioned in the Deed thereof, he my said son Samuel or his heirs or Assigns paying to my son Stephen or his heirs or Assigns twenty pounds money or in good Bills of Credit within on year after my decease.

Item To my son Stephen his Heirs and Assigns I give and Bequeath twenty pounds in good Bills of Credit to be paid equally by my executor within one year after my Decease: and the twenty pounds to be paid him by my son Samuel as above expressed. The other part of his portion being secured to him by Deed.

Item To my son Benoni his Heirs and Assigns, I give and Bequeath five shillings g in or as money to be paid equally by my executor. This other part of his Portion given him in Lands at Sutton as by the Deeds thereof will appear.

Item To my Daughter Elizabeth her Heirs and Assigns for ever I give and Bequeath all my Land and right in the fourth General Pasture (so called) in Newbury and one half of my Household Goods and fifty pounds money or in good passible Bills of Credit to be paid her, her heirs or assigns, by my son Joseph or by his heirs or assigns, within two years after my decease: besides what I have already given her.

Item To my Daughter Hannah Her Heirs and Assigns I give and Bequeath one half of my Household Goods and fifty pounds money or in good Bills of Credit to be paid to her or to her Heirs or Assigns by my son Moses or by his Heirs or assigns within two years after my decease: besides what I have already given her.

Item To my grandson Seth Chase and to his Heirs and to assigns for ever I give and Bequeath one hundred and thirty Acres of land which I purchased of Deacon Passaful Hall in the Township of Sutton as by the Deed thereof will appear which Tract of Land I give to my said grandson Seath as a reward for the faithful service Done for me in my age.

Item To my son Moses and to his Heirs and Assigns for ever I give and Bequeath the one half part of my Land in my Homestead with that I have already confirmed to him thereof by Deed on the easterly side of said Homestead with the Buildings thereof said half part being fifty one rods in breadth at the southerly end next the Country Road and forty two rods broad at the lower end near the River, as it is now staked out and my four acres of land at Richardsons Hill (so called) be it more or less and the half of my meadow or marsh Land and the half of my other Lands and of my Comon Rights in Newbury aforesaid, not herein nor before disposed of which Premises are to be and remain to him and his Heirs and Assigns for ever, upon his due and faithful performing the trust of an executor herein committed unto him on his part and the one half of my personal estate not herein disposed of otherwise.

Item To my son Joseph and to his Heirs and Assigns I give and Bequeath one half part of my Land in my Homestead on the westerly side with what I have already confirmed to him thereof by Deed with this buildings theron; Said half part being fifty five rods broad at the southerly end next the Country Road, and forty six rods broad at the Lower end near the river, as it is now staked out and the money which I had for my Rate Lott at the Boggs (so called) and the half of my meadow or marsh Land and the one half of my other Lands and of my comon Rights in said Town of Newbury, not herein, nor before dispose of: and the other half of my Personal Estate not herein otherwise disposed of: which Premises are to be and remain to him my said son Joseph and to his Heirs and Assigns for ever upon his faithfully performing the Trust of an executor on his par as herein is committed unto him.

And I give all my Apparel at my Decease to all my then surviving sons to be equally divided among them. And I do hereby appoint and make my son Moses and my son Joseph to be executors to this my last will and Testament; and I do order them to pay all my just Debts and my Funeral expenses and to pay the several Legacies according to time and manner as is herein expressed, and to receive whatsoever is or shall be due to me at the time of my Decease.

And I do hereby disannull and make utterly void all other Wills by me made or caused to be made and I do hereby establish and confirm these Presents only to be my last will and Testament.

In confirmation where of I have hereunto affixed my hand and seal, on the third Day of July, Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and forty and in the fourteen year of the reign of George the second of England.

Ann Follansbee, who was admitted to the Newbury church in 1698, died April 15*, 1708, at the birth of a son. Her tompstone at the old "Plains" graveyard is the oldes one known bearing the name Chase. [ref 61:955]
