One of the strangest cases involving name changes was that of Daniel Missilloway, who on June 14, 1672, married Anne Chase, Newbury, Mass., (Vital Records, Vol. 2, p. 330.29) mother of the Anne Chase who married Cormac Annis at Newbury, Mass., on May 15, 1666. Savage Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England mentions Daniel Mussilloway of Newbury, an Irishman, servant in 1665 to Joseph Plummer. At a session of the Essex County Quarterly Court at Salem in September, 1669, Daniel Musseleway was arraigned on a charge of abusing some of his neighbors. One of the witnesses testified that Daniel had threatened to knock John Ewers on the head, and considering his being of the Irish blood, made me fear-full of some mischevious intent (Essex County Court Records, Vol. 4, p. 179). The town historian of Newbury refers to him as Daniel Mussilaway, alias Roger Waldron, an Irishman (History of Newbury, Mass., by Joshua Coffin, p. 311). All this seems fairly well to establish it as a fact that he was an Irishman. The vital records show that An, wife of Daniell Mussuloway, died at Newbury on April 21, 1687; as Daniel Sillaway he was recorded as marrying Mary Griffin on September 7, 1687, and in one reference to him his name was spelled Mussullowain. He left many descendants, but in no case did they use the forms of the name by which he himself was recorded. Two sons were born at Newbury to Daniel and Mary Mussilloway, John on September 6, 1690, and Daniel on February 13, 1692, and their names are in the birth records as Mussillo-way. Yet, when John married Abigail Thurla on April 24, 1714, he was recorded John O Shulaway, and on Daniels marriage to Sarah Stevens on December 30, 1714, he was recorded Daniel Osiliway (Newbury Vital Records, Vol. 2, p. 368). Again, when Daniel, son of Daniel and Sarah (Stevens) OSiliway, married Mary Thorla on April 14, 1752, he was recorded Daniel Sillaway, but when his sister, Mary, married Daniel Merrill on November 27, 1759, her name was written in the record Mary OSilla-Way (Ibid.34).
