He was a merchant in Portland until the failing health of his first wife compelled them to make a change of climate, when he removed to West Newfield, bought a large farm and there resided until his death. He was several years town clerk. He m. (1st) in 1838, Miriam, dau. of Rufus and Nancy Burbank, of W. Newfield, b. 1815, and d. 1841; and (2d) 1844*, Jan. 16, Lydia, dau. of Capt. George and Lydia Thompson, b. 1817, July 27, at W. Newfield, who survived him. Mr. Manning d. 1873, Aug. 25. Ch., b. at W. Newfield: Charles, George, Miriam, Margie, Lorenzo.
