REV. JOSHUA4 EMERY, b. June 30, 1715, son of Daniel and Margaret (Gowen) Emery; married Nov. 4, 1735, Adah Tidy (born Jan. 22, 1716), daughter of John and Hannah (Morrill) Tidy. In 1766 or 1767, Joshua Emery separated from the Congregational Church in Berwick, Me., and was called a "New Light." Through his influence, Elder (afterwards Doctor) Hezekiah Smith of Haverhill, Mass., came to Berwick and presented the Baptist cause, which resulted in the organization of the "First Baptist Church of Berwick," June 28, 1768, the first of that denomination in Maine. Mr. Emery's name stands first on the list of the seventeen original members and his wife Adah, the first of the six female members. He was elected elder at the First Church meeting. He was never ordained but preached most of the time in this church till his death. He built a fourth part of the meeting house and gave it to the church, and a parsonage also. In thought he was independent and in opinion stern and resolute. He had some disagreements with his brethren but in the end he generally had the best of it. He died Feb., 1797. His wife died 1815. Children: Hannah, Margaret, Adah, Keziah, William, Joshua, John, Meribah, Mary, Hannah. [ref 48:319]

[note] HEZEKIAH SMITH came to New England in the spring of 1764 intending to return in the fall. He came to Haverhill to preach the pulpit at the West Parish for a time. He preached without notes; and his plain and practical sermons, able expositions of scripture, a strong and commanding voice, and impressive manner, drew together large numbers from the neighboring parishes. When it became known that he was a Baptist, the doors were speedily closed to him.

On New Years Day, 1765, a group of Haverhill residents gathered in the home of James Duncan for the purpose of organizing the Baptist Religious Society of Haverhill. They Refused the use of any of the towns meeting houses, the members of this organization met in the Colby home until a few months later when, under the leadership of the Reverend Hezekiah Smith, fifty-two members covenanted together to build their own meeting house. The First Baptist Church of Haverhill was the center of Reverend Smiths evangelistic efforts as hundreds gathered to hear the Word of God proclaimed and Christ uplifted.

During Reverend Smiths distinguished forty year ministry as the first pastor of First Baptist Church and as Chaplain to General George Washingtons Revolutionary Army, over fifteen churches in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts found their origins in our first pastors eloquent Gospel preaching.
