John Morrell built his first cabin on Birchen Brook on land which was his wife's dowry. He swapped it in 1676 for a place at Cold Harbor (Elliot), which remained in the family line and name until 1926 when it was sold by Charles Morrell to one Robert Johnson who also is a lineal descendant of John Morrell. In 1930 the house burned. John Morrell and several generations of descendants manufactured brick; at least two generations ran the ferry. They fought the Indians, but for defensive purposes only. They embraced Quakerism when it was the only sect persecuted by the Government. On April 30, 1690, John Morrell's house was one of the few garrisons of refuge left on the Maine coast. In 1720 he was again ordered to fortify; and in 1722 his son Nicholas, who had been deeded the property, was ordered to fortify again. After the Indian wars ended, the garrison was razed to make room for the mansion, which burned in 1930, soon after Johnson purchased it.
