He removed to Scarborough a few years before his father did, and at his father's death came into possession of the original Libby homestead. He took little part in town business, but his occasionally serving on committees of importance shows that he did not lack the confidence of his townsmen. That he was a charitable man appears from the following narrative: His son Eliakim, returning home from the Revolutionary war with nothing but his discharge to compensate him for his services, was taken sick and obliged to ask assistance of a stranger. On talking with the man to whom he applied, it appeared that many years before, while journeying penniless through Scarborough he had been taken in and cared for by Eliakim's parents and sent on his way with money to reach home. The man cared for him until he had sufficiently recovered, and then gave him money to last him home, just as he himself had been treated long before by Eliakim's parents. James Libby died 18 Feb. 1776, and his widow, 29 Mar. 1777. Children 1724-45: John, Jethro, Roger, Leah, Abigail, Hatevil, Anthony, Leah, Eliakim.
