Town clerk 6 yrs.; Proprietors' clerk from 1727 until old age; Selectm. 1721-42, except one yr.; often moderator. As lot-layer, he laid out most of the town. In 1726 divine service was held alternately in his ho. and in Col. Westbrook's ho. at Dunston. In 1728 he was of the committee to build the meeting ho. D. 1 Jan 1770. He m. 29 Feb. 1727[sic] Abigail Meserve, who d. 10 Nov. 1734, ch. 1731-33: Asa, Amy; 2d 17 Jan. 1739 Mary Jones, who d. June 1734, 3 ch. 1740: Ebenezer. SAMUEL LIBBY, born in Scarborough, 6 July 1689; married first, 29 Feb. 1727 [sic], ABIGAIL MESERVE; (died 10 Nov. 1734); second, 17 Jan. 1739, MARY JONES, daughter of John and Joanna (Cotton) Jones, of Scarborough. She died in June, 1754. In the flight from Scarborough in 1690, he was carried to Lynn, Mass and there he must have received his education, which was ?? to that of most of the second settlers of Scarborough. ?? ?? at the first town meeting, and was chosen clerk. From ?? time on he took a leading part in the affairs of both town and church. In February, 1726, it was voted by the town that divine services should be held "one Sabbath day at the house of Col. Wes??brook at Dunstan, and another at the house of Samuel Libby on Black Point," that is, alternately. In May, 1728, he was on the committee chosen to oversee the buildings g of the meeting-house. It was built a few rods north of his house, and the land between became the burying-ground, into which, a few years since, the site of his house was taken. He filled nearly all the offices in the gift of the town. He was clerk during the first six years of the town's organization; selectman from 1721 to 1742, except the year 1727; and frequently moderator, and placed on the most important committees. He was a skilled land-surveyor, and probably surveyed more during the thirty years that succeeded the re-organization of the town in 1720, than any other man in that region. He was lotlayer for the proprietors, and was also proprietors' clerk from 1727 until old age. In his latter days he became very feeble, and during the last fifteen years of his life his townsmen had to look to others for the many services which they had been accustomed to receive from him.
