JOHN LIBBY, born probably soon after the year 1700; married first, 15 June 1728, MARY GOODWIN, daughter of Wm. and Deliverance (Taylor) Goodwin, of Berwick; (died after a few years); second, 24 Aug. 1738, ANNA FOGG, 9-5-2. He accompanied his father from Lynn to Scarborough, and settled on a farm. His house was on Oak Hill, on the north side of what afterward became the post-road between Portland and Saco, a little west of the road leading to Gorham Corner. He was a man of unusual energy and ability, and filled repeatedly the most important positions in the town. We find him chosen "to locate Black Point school," and "to inspect the law relative to the killing of deer." He was also a land surveyor and succeeded in a measure to the position which his brother had filled. He was lieutenant in Capt. George Berry's company in 1745, and after the death of Capt. John Libby, 1-1, became known as Captain, and retained that epithet until his death, which was the result of an accident. He was on a fishing trip, with two others, and the small boat in which they were was upset near the mouth of Nonesuch River, and although an expert swimmer, he never rose. The two others escaped, and there were suspicions of foul play at the time of his death. Children by first wife 1729-44: Henry, Hannah, Lucy, Edward, Miriam.
