Active cit. of Portsm., repeat. moderator of town meetings. He m. 28 Apr. 1715 Lydia Badger, b. in Newbury 13 Apr. 1690. 8 ch., incl Jeremiah, fa. of Jeremiah, Esq., 1748-1824, postmaster of Portsm. under Washington, and friend of Jeremey Holknap. [ref 22] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JEREMIAH LIBBY, born in Scarborough in 1689; married 28 April 1715, LYDIA BADGER, daughter of John and Hannah (Swett) Badger, of Portsmouth. He was ten months old when his father was driven from his home in Scarborough, and fled to Portsmouth. In Portsmouth he ever afterward lived, and practiced successfully the calling of house-carpenter. He took no active part in town affairs, but that he had the confidence and esteem of his townsmen is evident from his being several times on important committees, and that he was at times chosen moderator of the town meetings. He and his wife were both members of the Church of Christ. She died before him by a number of years. He died in the spring of 1766, having outlived six of his eight children: Jeremiah, George, John, Lydia, Sarah, Theodore, Sarah, Abigail.
