DAVID LIBBY, born probably in Scarborough before his parents were driven away in 1690; married ESTHER HANSCOM, daughter of Thomas and Alice Hanscom, of Kittery. He lived on a part of his father's homestead, in Kittery, now Eliot, until about 1731. During a portion of that time he was a licensed retailer. From Kittery he moved to Scarborough, and settled on a farm on Scottow's Hill. His house was a garrison, and stood about two rods southeast of the late residence of Leonard Libby, 10-2-4-8-6. There it was that Nathaniel Dresser was killed by the Indians. David Libby shot the Indian that did the deed, and wounded him so severely that he died soon after. David Libby died in February, 1765, and was buried on the 6th of that month. His wife died in March, 1761. They were doubtless both buried a few rods northeast of the house of Lemuel Libby, mentioned above. This spot was for many years the principal burying-ground of the inhabitants of that locality, and it is said that more than a hundred interments were made there; but it is now covered by a dense growth of shrubs and underbrush, and not more than three or four graves are discernible. Children 1714-33: Alice, Josiah, George, Esther, Timothy, David, Eleanor, Thomas. [ref 25:47]
