GRANT, James, Capt., carpenter, Berwick, son of Peter and Joan; app. the James jr. wounded by Ind. 5 Oct. 1692. Tr.j. 1703, 1714. Late collector of taxes in 1714 when sued by Berw. selectmen. Captain in Ind. war 1725; paid �200 in 1729 for bldg. the trading ho. up Saco River. In June 1734, ag. 63, he dep. ab. Quamph. and the Lovering ho. In 1735 the town laid out to him 70 a., 60 by virtue of gr. to James of 13 Apr. 1671 (called in the rec. gr. to himself), the rest part of a gr. to hims. 10 May 1703. On 3 Nov. 1735 he o.c. and was bp. in bed, being at point of death. Adm. gr. 20 Oct. 1741, bondsm. Robert Patterson and John Brooks of Biddeford. He m. 1st 5 Oct 1693 Mary Nason (Jonathan); 2d bef. 1709 Rachel Stone (Daniel). 5+6 ch., incl. Peter, James. [ref 22]
