He died 19 April 1687. [ref 33:376] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John2 Fernald (Renald1) was born in Strawberry Bank about 1649, presumably on Doctor's Island. He married about 1670 Mary Norman, daughter of William Norman, a philandering sailor, who persuaded Margery Randall of Kittery to marry him, as she claimed, while, unknown to her, he had a wife in England. The court decreed that they should be separated, Margery speedily found a more stable husband in Thomas Spinney, a Kittery weaver, and small Mary Norman was brought up in his household. Fernald died on April 19, 1687, leaving Mary his widow. On March 1, 1669/70, John Fernald of Portsmouth, cordwainer, bought from Elizabeth Edwards a house and twelve acres at Boiling Rock in Kittery but, as he was a subscriber to the support of the Portsmouth minister in 1670/1, he probably did not cross the river to make his home at once. In 1678, "of Kittery," he sold to John Dennett of Portsmouth twelve acres of upland on Mr. Richard Cutt's mill creek "which said twelve acres of land was granted unto mr Renald ffurnald in his life time." He had Kittery grants i 1671, and 1674 and bought twenty acres at Spinney Cove from William Hearle in 1680. His widow was appointed to administer his estate in 1687. Children: John, James, Thomas, Lydia, Margery, Amos. [ref 46:1-552] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ||||||||||
| Notes for Mary NORMAN | ||||||||||
| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MARY m. John Fernald before 1679. [ref 33:740] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Stackpole calls her Mary Spinney, dau of Thomas Spinney. Mary's parents, William Norman and Margery Randall were divorced after Mary was born. Spinney is her step-father, and unless she was adopted, her name is NORMAN, even though she is "Mary Spinney" in some records. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ||||||||||
