| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - son of Richard NORMAN and Margaret ALFORD - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NORMAN, William, Cape Porpus, fisherman, pretending that he had been divorced from his w. in England, contractred a bigamous mar. with Marjorie Randall. In Wells ct. 11 Mar. 1650-1 they were legally sep., their common prop. div. and he was banished from the Prov. if he could not present legal ev. of his alleged divorce within 18 months. As he failed to do this, she was gr. a 'divorce,' altho the ct. seemed doubtful if she had gone thru with a mar. ceremony, and for good measure Norman got 25 lashes at the whipping post. At the same ct. poor Marjorie was fined for lying and for abusing the government and was obliged to make due apologies to the w. of Thomas Withers for making 'threatening speeches' to her. Also she was warned to avoid the attentions of one Thomas "Spleny,' but six months later Marjorie, the late w. of William Norman, and Thomas Spinney were 'keeping company together at unseasonable times' (N.H. ct.), which led to marriage. By Norman she had a dau. Mary, who m. John Fernald. Norman went eastward and bot House Isl. in Casco Bay with three other fishermen, John Wallis, Nicholas White and Geo. Bartell (Bartlett), selling his 1/4 to Geo. Munjoy 10 Nov. 1663. Sued by Thos. Mills for 'disappointing his voyage' in 1662. Abs. from Scarboro meet. in 1672. Called of Black Pt. in 1674 when Ralph Tristram was app. adm of his est.
