DEERING, Roger, Capt., Esq., b. ab. 1678, shipwright, son of Roger and Mary. Marrying Sarah Jordan (Dominicus), he bot in the other heirs to the famous Nonsuch farm, Scarb., and rem. there in 1716. At the outbreak of the Three Years War, 26 June 1723, the Ind. k. his wife and capt. her young cous., Tho. Jordan, her niece Mary Scammon, and a boy, John Hunnewell. Abandoning Scarb. in sorrow, he was 'of Portsmouth' in 1725, 'of Newcastle' in 1727, but later returned and became the leading citizen of the town, captain of the train band, J.P., and often Dep. to the Genl. Ct. He had been Lieut. at Kit. and was first selectm. after Scarb. was reorganized in 1730 and on his return in 1728. Having never had ch*., his will, 3 Nov. 1741 - 12 Jan. 1741-2, gave his large est. to his 2d w. Elizabeth (Litton) Skillings, Mar. 16 Jan. 1723-4, except sums to the Scarb. church and 'the religious industrious poor of the town.' [ref 22]

WILL of ROGER DEERING, 3 Nov 1741 - 12 Jan 1741/2:

In the Name of God Amen. I Roger Dearing Esqr of Scarborough in ye County of York and Province of ye Massachusats Bay in New-England being of sound mind & memory for which I bless God and considering ye Mortal State of my Body which must Dye & return to ye Earth as it was; and being by daily infirmity & wasting sickness admonished to prepare for that important Change Do make & Ordain this my last Will & Testament, That is To say Principally & first of all I give & recomend my Soul into ye Hands of God who gaue it hoping he will receiue it to mercy through his Sons Merits; and my Body I comit to a Decent Christian Burial at ye Discretion of my Executrix. And as Touching such worlkly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life, I give demise & dispose of it in ye following manner. Imprimis, To my well beloved Wife Eliza Dearing whom I likewise Constitute make & ordain my Sole Executrix of this my Will and Testament, I Do give & bequeath all & singular my Lands Houses, Messuages & Tenements Moneys Goods & Chattels that I have in ye Township of Scarborough or otherwhere, To her Heirs and Assigns for ever. to her & their proper Use benefit & behoof for ever only Excepting what must go for ye payment of Debts funeral Charges ye Expences of Adminisn and what is here after bequeathed.

Item. To the Church of Scarborough to which I have hitherto sustained a particular Relation I give & bequeath the sum of ten pounds.

Item. To the Religious industrious poor of ye Town of Scarborough I give & bequeath the sum of ten pounds The said poor to be chosen at ye discretion of my Executrix.

And I Do hereby utterly disallow revoak & disannull all & every other former Testament Wills Legacies & bequests & Executors by me in any wise before named willed and bequeathed: Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seal the third Day of Novembr Anno Domini one Thousand seven hundred & forty one.

ELIZABETH 4 LITTEN (Katherine 3 Humphrey 2 William 1), married first Kittery 17 May 1707 (KVR, 44) JOSIAH SKILLINGS, whose administration was granted 7 July 1719 (MPA 3/20), son of John Skillings (LND, 636); married second Kittery 12* Jan 1723/4 (KVR, 60) as his second wife ROGER DEERING, died Scarborough before 12 Jan 1741 when his will was probated (MW 434-5). No children with Deering. Roger and Elizabeth were granted administration of her sister Mary's estate 21 Oct 1735 (MPA 5/16). Children (KVR, 44), surname SKILLINGS: John, Edward, Elizabeth.
