| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - son of John TOWNSEND and Elizabeth MONTGOMERY - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - James Townsend was one of the leading men of Oyster Bay. James married as his first wife, about 1671, Elizabeth Wright, the daughter of Peter and Alice Wright. By Elizabeth he had three children named James, Alice and Job, all of whom were mentioned by their Wright relatives in probate records or deeds. James's second wife was Jane Ruddock, daughter of Henry and Mable (Burroughs) Ruddock, whom he married 16 October 1677. Jane was the mother of at least two of his sons, Thomas and Ruddock, one daughter, Rose, and several children who died young. His third wife, whom he married about 1688, was Mayflower descendant Delivered Pratt, the daughter of John Pratt (Mary Priest, Degory) and his wife, Ann Barker. Delivered Pratt was the mother of James Townsend's youngest children, Joseph, Patience, Joshua, Deborah and Ruemourn, the last child apparently born posthumously. James Townsend of Cedar Swamp in Oyster Bay, husbandman, died before 2 May 1698, the date his will was probated. In his will dated 11 February 1698, James Townsend requested to be buried with his late wife, Jane, and her children. He gave his oldest son, James, half of the 60 acre lot called "the great hill," half of the land at the head of Oyster Bay Mill River, one share of his meadow in Beaver Swamp, and one-seventh part of the meadow "at the south." He have his fourth son, Redurch [Ruddock], the other half of his land at the great hill and in Beaver Swamp, and one-sixth of his meadows. He gave his son Job, his right in lands next to Samuel Dickinson's land, swamp, etc. To sons Thomas and Daniel, he gave his farm "running as far as the wells." His remaining land and stock was bequeathed to his sons, Joseph and Joshua. He gave his daughter, Rose, "one featherbed and furniture thereunto belonging which were her mother's," and two large pewter dishes, three pewter plates and other articles, which were to be hers when she reached the age of eighteen or married. His well-beloved wife, Delivered, was named as sole executrix. Witnesses were Peter Adolph, Samuel Dickinson and Thomas Langdon. The will was acknowledged by Samuel Dickinson and Thomas Langdon, 2 May 1698. Peter Adolph acknowledged it 19 May 1698. On that date the will was allowed and approved and Delivered Townsend was given full authority as executrix of her deceased husband's estate. Children by Elizabeth abt 1672-76: James, Alice, Job; by Jane abt 1678-83: Thomas, Ruddock, Rose, 2 unnamed; by either Jane or Delivered 1686: Daniel; by Delivered abt 1690-1698: Joseph, Patience, Joshua, Deborah, Ruemorne.
