COMBS, JOHN -- On 12 October 1630 Ralph Wallen sold his house and garden plot to Mr. John Coombe. He married ca. 1631 Sarah Priest daughter of 1620 Mayflower passenger Degory Priest (...where she is callad a 'daughter' of Godbert Godbertson, but was in fact his daughter-in-law.) [step-daughter] On 24 Jan 1633/34 John Coombs, gentleman, exchanged thirty acres of land, which he possessed in the right of Sarah his wife, with Mr. Thomas Prence...Though he was referred to as 'Mr.' and 'Gentleman' in various land and other transactions...and he was on the earliest freeman list, Coombs became one of the few recorded freemen of Plymouth Colony to be disfranchised (for drunkenness in his case) on 3 September 1639...however, he was readmitted as a freeman on 5 June 1644...On 4 December 1638 he was among a group of nine men fined three shillings for not appearing at court...On 5 April 1642 Mr. John Coombs agreed he owed 3/4/6 demanded by John Gorham, and Gorham agreed that he would give Coombs four or five bushels of wheat to sow his ground with, so that Combs could repay his debt with the proceeds of the harvest. On the same day Combs for 14, forty shillings gs[sic], transferred the unexpired term of his servant William Launder to Mr. William Thomas...He died sometime prior to 1 August 1648 when the court ordered that the one-third part of the English corn due Mrs. Combs from William Spooner be turned over to Thomas Cushman. The court noted that Mr. John Coombs was indebted to the estate of Godbert Godbertson, which in turn owed Isaac Allerton, who had turned the debt over to his son-in-law Thomas Cushman...from a document dated 27 October 1646 by Allerton, it appeared that the debt was quite large (100 sterling). Also on 1 August 1646 the court noted that Combs's children were now with William Spooner, who was ordered to keep them for the present and not dispose of them without further court order...Combs had taken over the indenture of William Spooner, of Colchester, County Essex, England, from John Holmes in 1637 for six years. On 6 Mar 1642/43 the court ordered William Spooner to pay the debt of ten shillings of his master Mr. Combs to Mr. William Hanbury." [ref 90:272]

1633-34, John Coombe, who married Sarah Priest, the younger, and was therefore the brother-in-law of Phinehas Pratt, sold unto John Doane "a dwelling house and homestead with the enclosure and outbuildings thereto belonging, next adjoining to the late dwelling house of Godbert Godbertson, on the west side thereof and the Herring river on the east in Plymouth, for nine pounds and ten shillings gs." [ref 40:41]

3 August 1640 Plymouth court ordered that "as it appeareth by testimony of Josuah Pratt & otherwise, that the two acres of upland lying at Wellingsly Brook, on the north side of the lots given to Godbert Godbertson, were given by the said Godbert Godbertson to John Combe, gent., & Phineas Pratt, in marriage with their wives, his daughters, the Court doth confirm the said two acres unto the said John Combe & Phineas Pratt, their heirs & assigns forever" [ref 26]

Even though John Coombs was consistently referred to as "Mr." or "gent.," he was constantly embroiled in situations that would have been more appropriate for someone at the opposite end of the social spectrum. As noted above, he was disenfranchised for excessive drinking. On several occasions he was involved in cases of debt, usually as defendant, and with judgment usually against him [ref 26]

DEATH: By 15 October 1646 (by which date his wife was in England, having left at least one young child behind [ref 26]
