JAMES 4 CHADBOURNE (James 3 Humphrey William ) born Kittery 25 Sep 1684 (KVR, 42); married Kittery 14 Sep 1713 SARAH 3 (HATCH) DOWNING. In 1719 James was one of the trustees to buy a parsonage lot (Old Eliot VI, 54-7); in 1722 he signed as a selectman an order arranging the garrison houses (Old Eliot I, 120, reprinted NEHGR); in 1725 he was an ensign in Capt. James Grant's Co (Mass Archives 91:154-6, NEHGR 49:185). He appears on a list of members of the Second Church in Kittery in 1727 (Second Church, Kittery ms, MHS, 14).

James was a blacksmith in Kittery. On 12 Sep 1730 James of Kittery accused Charles Frost, John Belcher, and Hector, a negro of Charles Frost's, of assault. In 1729, his property was described as "on Stoney Brook." On 30 October 1733, James Chadbourne of Kittery, innholder, claimed that Capt. Edward Preble owed him 16 shillings gs, one penny for "vicctuals & Drink & Lodging and Horse Meat" (Old York Historical Society, manuscript).

He was an original grantee of land in Phillipstown (Sanford) in 1739. He drew a lot and was a proprietor in the town of Lebanon in 1735, along with Joseph (Town Register Book), but probably never lived there.

In Sanford he built a blockhouse and the second saw and grist mill near what later became the Goodall Plush factory. The mill was described as the priviledge #11, a fall of nine feet, located about a quarter mile below Moulton's "2nd falls at the Corner." The mill was standing as early as March 1754.

Known to have been there before 1750, he was a proprietor at the founding of Sanford, with 2 sellers' lot of 130 acres, but was deceased before the incorporation (H-Sanford). James was the progenitor of the Chadbourne families of Sanford, although all the children were born in Kittery (through 1729). He had 4 sons in the French and Indian wars (LND). The "oldest house in Sanford" was built by him or his sons in the 1750's.

Middlesex County Court shows a suit for debt between James Chadborn and Richard Lutten (1733-75A-2).

Children (KVR, 42), surname CHADBOURNE: James, John, Samuel, Sarah, Elizabeth, Luce, Joshua.
