John, Mr., Capt., mariner, Portsmouth. Consid. by desc. an immigrant from England, the mar. of his dau. into the Downing-Hatch fam. may point to Philip as his fa. He was at Great Isl. 15 Jan. 1684-5, mate of the "Success"; in June sailed on the ketch "America," John Jackson master. Taxed Str. Bk. Dec. 1688; from that time maint. his home in Portsm. and kept his goods in the old Cutts wareho. Taxed 1690, and house. His and his w.'s seating at the meeting ho. denoted a good social position. On Sept. 14, 1695, in London, he identif. the handwriting of Rich. Martyn, Speaker, and t??tif: 'being in N.H. ab. 2 yrs. since' heard great complaints among the inhabitants of apprehension of the Inds. Rep. 1696, jury 1699. In 1698 he bot near the Great House; in 1699 the Rymes warf and wareho. Adm. to wid. Sarah 2 May 1701.
