Capt. John, Kittery, where outstanding citizen and a military leader, son of Thomas Wincoll; came from Watertown where he was a propr. in 1636-7 and made freeman in 1646. Kit. selectman 1652, 1654, and engaged to build a mill on Great Newichawannock River for Walter Price and Richard Cooke in 1650, but not here perma. until �1662, as Watert. selectman 1656, 1661, 1662; Rep. 1658, and there in 1657 he settled the estates of his father Thomas and of Ann Fleming. Here interested in mills and timber lands, and assoc. with Thomas Broughton whom he called 'brother' (and George Broughton 'cousin'), Roger Plaisted and John Hull (the mintmaster). Kit. selectman and comr. many yrs; lot layer and surveyor; Deputy 1653-55, 1675, 1677, 1678; Assoc. Judge; J.P.; Crier of the Prov. Ct. 1692; Clerk and Register at time of death. Called Sergt. at Watert.; elected Lieut. at Kit. 4 July 1653; com. Capt. of Militia 16 Aug. 1665. His 1st w. Elizabeth, liv. 24 Sept. 1673, d.s.p. He m. 2d, contract 29 Feb. 1675-6 Mary Etherington (Thomas) who d. bef. 5 June 1670; m. 3d bef. 16 Sept. 1682 wid. Olive Plaisted. Mounting his horse to ride with Maj. John Wincoll had a grant of one hundred acres 11 Dec. 1662. The same day fifty acres next north were granted to George Veasy, which he and wife, Mary, soon sold to Wincoll. The southern half of his own lot Wincoll sold to Benoni Hodsdon, 31 May 1671. John Wincoll came to Kittery from Watertown, Mass., and signed the submission of 1652. He was representative to the General Court in 1653, 1654 and 1655, and was often selectman. He returned to Watertown for a time and represented that town at General Court in 1658. With the Broughtons and John Hull he was interested in the sawmills at Salmon Falls and had extensive grants of land and lumber above the Falls. He served many years as Justice of the Peace and Associate Judge and again represented Kittery at General Court in 1675, 1677 and 1678. He was for many years a surveyor and laid out most of the original lots in Berwick. He was captain in the militia and in 1675 while he was with his company at Scarborough his house at Salmon Falls was burned by Indians. He served for a time as Clerk of Courts and Register of Deeds and of Probate. He was killed by a fall from his horse 22 Oct. 1694. He married Mary Etherington about 1675 and Olive, widow of Roger Paisted, before 1683. [ref 33:134]

WINCOLL, John, yeoman, Watertown, proprietor, 1636; frm. May 6, 1646; surveyor in 1647. Rem. to Kittery; took oath of allegiance to Mass. govt. 16 Nov. 1652. Signed petition to Parliament respecting Mr. Leader 20 Dec. 1652, "John Wincoll." Selectman, 1654. Captain. Engaged in 1659 to build a sawmill upon the salmon falls of great Mewichawannock river for Walter Price and Richard Cooke. The town gave him the timber on a certain tract of land in connection therewith; this he mortg. in 1666. He deposed 6 July, 1671, relative to contracts he had made for the sale of lumber; referred to his "brother" Thomas Broughton. Associate judge in 1673. "Captain John Wincol falls off his horse and killed Oct. 22 1694. Captain Hammond of Kittery, appointed by the Lt. governour and Council, Dec. 4, 1694, clerk and register, vice Capt. Wincol, dec." Capt JOHN WINCOLL of Watertown, born about 1616, died when he fell from his horse 22 Oct 1694 (LND, 763), son of Thomas and Ann Fleming Wincoll (LND). John married first Elizabeth _____, who was living 24 Sep 1673. There were no children of this marriage. He married third before 16 Sep 1682 (LND, 560) Olive (Coleman) Plaisted, widow of Roger Plaisted. John was a proprietor 1636/7, a freeman 1646 (LND, 762). [ref 74:49]
