EPHRAIM 4 JOY (Susanna 3 Spencer, Patience 2 William 1), born Kittery 1674/5 (age 18 in 1693); died before 22 Aug 1714 when his wife was called widow Sarah Joy at son Samuel's baptism; married first before 1699 _____ GOFFE, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Crawford) Goffe; married second 22 Feb 1703 SARAH NOCKE, born 4 May 1680, died after Oct 1723 (LND, 393, 116), daughter of Sylvanus and Elizabeth (Emery) Nock. Sarah married second after Oct 1723 (LND, 393, 116) John Brawn or Brown of Biddeford. Ephraim Joy was possessed of a violent temper and was brought to court 3 Oct 1699 for cursing, swearing and abusing his wife. Many Chadbourne relations came forward to testify to his actions in this case (MPC IV:248). He was also charged with abusing his mother-in-law, Elizabeth (Crawford) (Goffe) Fost, who had married 25 Jan 1686/7 John Fost (widower of Mary Chadbourne). Widow Sarah Joy was granted administration of her husband's estate 4 Dec 1716 (MPA 2/176, 226). Some time previous to her presentment for fornication 2 Apr 1717 (MPC V:196), Sarah had an illegitimate child named Nathaniel Joy, baptized 10 Oct 1723. Nathaniel married S Berwick before 4 Dec 1748 Patience Hearle, daughter of William (see #25.iv) and Margaret (Warren) Hearle. They had children, surname Joy: Sarah, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Patience. Nathaniel was servant to John Keys in his 1736 will (MW, 401). Children (LND, 393), surname JOY: Sarah, Mary, Ephraim, Susanna, Thomas, Samuel, Benjamin. [ref 74:51]

Ephraim was often fined and whipped for profane cursing; he was a violent man and often beat his wife and her mother Elizabeth (Crawford) (Goffe) Fost

Ephraim was repeatedly fined, whipped and jailed for profane cursing, but he never again was seen in court for striking his wife. His remorse was either sincere or his purse depleted when he was again charged with profane swearing in January of 1703/4, as the following petition implies:
