- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CANNEY, Joseph, was given a house and land east of Huckleberry Hill, Dover Neck, in 1673, and added the Stokes lot. Gr.j. 1676, jury often. Adm. 17 Nov 1690 to wid. Mary. He m. by 1669 one Mary, who app. d.s.p.; 2d 25 Dec. 1670 Mary Clements, 3d ab. 1673 Mary Dam, who m. 2d 22 Nov 1701 William Harford. Ch: Jane, Joseph, Mary, Thomas, John, Elizabeth. [ref 22] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JOSEPH, Dover, s. of Thomas, m. 25 Dec. 1670, Mary, d. of Job Clements, had Jane, Joseph, and Mary. [ref 20] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Joseph Canney, born about 1645, died about 1690 in Dover, married Mary Clements. She was his second wife, his first was also named Mary, and he married thirdly, about 1673, Mary Dam, b. 1651, daughter of John Dam. Children of Joseph Canney born in Dover. By first wife Mary, none that are known. By second wife Mary Clements: Jane. By third wife Mary Dam: Joseph, Mary, Thomas, John, Elizabeth. [ref 86:66] The proof that Joseph Canney had a wife Mary, before he was married to Mary Clements, is found in deeds recorded in the Province of New Hampshire registry. On the 3 Dec. 1669, Thomas Canney conveyed to his son Joseph, real and personal property to belong "after his decease to Joseph Canney above sd & his heires Lawfully begotten on ye body of Mary his wife & for want thereof," etc. This deed was acknowledged on the 8 Dec. 1669 (Province NH deeds 3:20b). [ref 86:66] In a later (undated) deed, Thomas Canney refers to this conveyance and adds "for his (Joseph's) further assurance of & better Title unto ye sd house & lands ... I make over & alienate to my Sayd Sonn Joseph Canney & his heires Lawfully begotten of his present wife Mary," etc., and he acknowledged this deed, 6 Oct. 1670 (Ibid. 3:41a.), while Joseph Canney did not marry Mary Clements until the following December. On the 28 June 1673, Thomas Canney declared both deeds void, and made a third to his son Joseph, in which no wife was mentioned (Province NH deeds 3:82).
