Mainwaring, son of William Hilton and Anne Parsons; b. 1683; �20 in Apr. 1703, dep. that he had been hired by Benj. Donnell to help canoe away hay which Samuel Donnell, who sued 'Manrin Hilton' for it, had cut. Again in ct. July, 1705, sued by Kittery men for taking hay on Drake Isl., Wells. Lt. Jeremiah Storer dep. that Hilton had satisf. him for the grass he and Joshua Downing had cut. In that same term is ano. case which proves that Elizabeth Thompson, dau. of John and Sarah (Emery) is respons. for a large segment of those bearing the name Hilton. Having joined the church 23 May 1703 and being about to marry Alexander Gray, she came into ct. and discl. the paternity, long shielded, of her two illegit. ch. The two young men involved, Thomas Ball of Kit. and Mannerell Hilton of York, soon vanished for all time. In the Wells case the writ was returned 'non est inv.' but on 20 Dec. 1705 Joshua Downing of Kit. and 'Manuel Hilton of York, bachelor,' signed a joint note, which Downing paid when sued. Ch: Ebenezer, b. ab. 1703, first Gray, then 'alias Hilton,' finally Hilton. When ab. 17 Feb. 28, 1719-20, 'Ebenezer, son of Elizabeth Gray,' owned cov. and was bp. He m. Mary Lord (Wm.) and built on her fa.'s land. As energ. as ambit., 'house-carpenter,' 'wheelwright,' 'millwright,' he soon made the contract, ab. 1735, with Rev. Christopher Toppan for vast virgin lands, beginning at Montsweag, near Murphy's Corner, Woolwich, which cost him and many of his blood their lives.
