Thomas became part of Captain Samuel Gallup's Company in Sir William Phipp's Expedition into Canada. Phipps had gained wealth when he located a Spanish treasure ship which had been wrecked off the coast of the Bahamas and military respect when his fleet of 7 vessels captured Port Royal on May 11, 1690 without a shot being fired. On August 9, 1690 he led a fleet of 30 ships out of Boston bound for Quebec. However, their progress was slow and they did not arrive until October 16th. The French had plenty of warning and built their defenses. The English were outnumbered and low on ammunition, so the decision was made to retreat. Thomas was killed during the fighting in Quebec. On the voyage back to Boston several ships were lost at sea.
