MEAD, Nicholas, tanner, Charlestown, Bristol, R.I., and Boston 1679-96. By 1699, he leased the Vaughan farm at Greenland; Portsm. 1701, his tanyard taxed 1707; Dep. Coll. of Excise 1708; bot a Berwick tannery 1713, and, of Portsm. 1714, sold an Exeter ho. to s. John. In prison 1715, prob. for debt when Samuel Chapman jr. of Greenl. was trying to get him out. Berw. 1717; in jail again 1720 (broke out) and ord. released on surety of two sons. His w. Elisabeth, adm. to Charlest. Ch. 1681, was liv. 1717. A Bristol census of 1688-9 counts 6 ch. Found are: Susanna, Elizabeth, Ebenezer, Katherine, John, Joseph, Benjamin, Nicholas, John. [ref 22]
