Was never m. it is thot. rem. 1657, to Marblehead, d. 1660. In Essex Inst. II. 29, Cheever says, he was prosecut. in 1652, for familiar. with the devil. Either the folly was not prov. or it was not capital [ref 20] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John, ae 3 in 1634; res. at Marblehead in 1657 [ref 37:64] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - whipped for "having familiarity with the Devil" because he had bewitched a dog, and the dog was hung as a witch. The witnesses against him testified that he told them he had read in a book of magic, and had heard a voice asking what work he had for him and the voice answered, "Go make a bridge of sand over the sea; go make a ladder of sand up to heaven, and go to God and come down no more."
