| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John, b. 18 Feb. 1685, an Exeter wit. 1702, Berwick 1715; m. 11 Dec. 1718 Jane Warren; 5 ch. bp. at Berwick [ref 22] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - John3 Stockbridge (John2,1) was born in Hampton, New Hampshire, 18 February 1684/5 (Hampton records 1:149), and probably died in Berwick Maine, between 1746 and 1762. He married Jane3 Warren in Berwick, 11 December 1718 (Berwick register 55:310). She was the daughter of Gilbert Sr2 (James1) and Sarah (Emery) Warren of Berwick and was living in Berwick in 1762. John Stockbridge [or his father?] witnessed a deed in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1702 (NH province deeds 7:73). From 10 October 1710 to 10 October 1711, John served as a corporal - as did his brother Moses - in Captain David Pigeon's Company of New England Troops during "its being at Annapolis Royal [in Nova Scotia], in Her Majesties Service," following the capture of the fort there from the French. By 1715 John was of Berwick, Maine (then still part of Massachusetts), when he renounced administration of his father's estate. He may have been the "John Stocklenes" who witnessed a Berwick deed in 1716 (York deeds 8:158). John was described as a weaver of Berwick when he sold sixty acres of his deceased father's land in Kingston, New Hampshire, to John Ladd, for 60, on 25 November 1722; forty acres in Kingston, for 60, to William Lovering of Exeter, mason, on 9 October 1729; and about 3/4 of an acre there, for 20s., to Joseph Young of Kingston, carpenter, on 29 October 1729. John Stockbridge of Berwick, husbandman, on 29 April 1746, sold for 25 to Samuel Connor of Exeter, Gentleman, "the Right Title Interest . . . in any lands . . . of My Father John Stockbridge late of Hampton . . . Dec'd & . . . any Instrument Receipt or other thing of Abraham Stockbridge - late of Cape Breton Deceased . . . his son." This latter deed has the curious statement that John was "the True sole & Lawfull owner of Severals Tracts or Parts of land in Several Towns in said Province of New Hampshier" (NH province deeds 16:301,580,581; 42:117,299,300). The Stockbridges were members of the First Church of Berwick, Jane joining on 2 June 1728 and John on 26 October 1729 (church records 82:88,90). John signed a petition in Berwick in 1742, requesting that the General Court in Boston divide Berwick into two parishes so that there could be two meetinghouses to accommodate the people settling in "the out Lands as they have done since ye last Indian Warr." Children baptized Berwick 1720-32: Mary, Warren, Rachel, John, Sarah and probably Elisha. [ref 87:3-529] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ||||||||||

Sarah Warren of Berwick, widow, deeded to her "Son in Law John Stockbridge . . . Husbandman & my Loving Daughter his Wife Jane Stockbridge" one half of a parcel of land in Berwick, five acres, with orchards and buildings, on 8 February 1744/5 (York deeds 35:261). On 4 February 1762, Jane Stockbridge of Berwick, widow, deeded five acres there (which her mother had deeded to her and John in 1745) to John Warren, for maintaining her in her "old age and decriped state" (York co deeds 38:179).
