| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rev. Samuel, bp. at All Saints, Northampton, 30 Nov. 1608, s. of Gov. Tho. by Dorothy d. of Edmund Yorke, and half-br. of Gov. Joseph (whose mother was a Dighton), and by marriage became son of another gov. and br. of two more. He was a merchant and budding magistrate when he truned to preaching, and app. never depended on that service to support his large fam. by 3 wives. Lieut. in 1631, he was at Ipsw. with f. and bro.-in-law in 1635, then at Camb., then with the first at Salis., where he was on the Co. Ct. bench and was Rep. 1641-1645. Evidence cont. through life of pub. conf. in his judgm. and impart. In 1680 Richard MARTIN, Esq., Mr. Saml. Dudley, Mr. Seaborn Cotton and Elias Stileman were the committee to draw up the new laws. Exeter, aft. calling many, invited him to come and preach 13 May 1650, to bring his family when they had bot him a house. Portsmouth voted 27 Oct. 1656 to invite Mr. Samuel "Dudlow' to preach, and 10 Nov. agreed with him 'to come unto us this next spring' at �80 per yr. But he continued to preach at Exeter until his death, with no evid. of church records kept. Inv. 10 Feb. 1682-3, adm. to widow's 'sonn in Lawe' Theophilus. He m. 1st Mary Winthrop who d. 12 Apr. 1644; 2d Mary Byley, who came in 1638, ag. 22, whose sis.-in-law mar. Dep.-Gov. Sam. Symonds; 3d by 1651, one Elizabeth, ag. 43 in 1671, who in 1702 was liv. with their d. Dorothy Leavitt. The deeds of the 50 a. lots into which his 600 a. gr. was divided prove his 12 heirs, Theophilus not claiming a double share. In 1725, with only 2 s. liv. and all but 2 of his 10 s. childless, has 10 Dudleys. Winthrop had in Boston prob. Thomas, John, Margaret, Samuel, Ann. His w. d. 12 Apr. 1643, but he soon m. ano. Mary, wh. is by Mr. Dean Dudley with much prob. conject. to have been sis. of Henry Byley, had Theophilus, Mary, Byley, Mary, Thomas, again; and by third w. Elizabeth had Elizabeth, Stephen, James, Timothy, Abigail, Dorothy, Rebecca, and Samuel; but we kn. not their respective dates. He was rep. for Salisbury 1644, had some desire to go to New London; but was some yrs. at Hampton, and finally bec. the min. at E. and d. 10 Feb. 1684. Samuel Dudley, son of Governor Thomas Dudley, was born about 1610, in Northamptonshire, England, and was probably educated for the ministry in the Puritan denomination. He came to New England with his father when he was twenty, and in 1632 or 1633, married Mary, daughter of Governor Winthrop, and their first three children were baptized in Boston. The two sons lived many years with their grandfather, Governor Dudley, and both died early and unmarried. Rev. Samuel Dudley moved from Cambridge to Ipswich about 1635. His wife died in 1643, and he married (second) Mary Byley or Bayley, of Salisbury, Massachusetts, sister of Henry Bayley, from Salisbury, England, Dudley was deputy to the general court from Salisbury in 1641-42-43-44-45, was often chairman, and held other town offices. In March, 1648, he was appointed associate judge with two others to hold a court from year to year at Salisbury. In 1650 he became minister for Exeter, New Hampshire, having preached for some time in 1649, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He also carried on a farm and lived a simple country life. His second wife died at Exeter about 1651, and he married later, Elizabeth --. Of his ten sons, Stephen alone had sons who carried on the line. He had many grants of land, but his family was large and he never became wealthy as his father had been. He died at Exeter, February 10, 1683, aged seventy-three. John W., about 1632, and by her had 5 children. She died April 16, 1643, at Salisbury, Mass. Rev. Samuel,2 married 2nd, Mary Byley of Salisbury, Mass., in 1643 and had probably five children. Rev. Samuel married 3rd, Elizabeth, by whom he had 8 children. He was the second of the twelve who obtained the original grant for Salisbury; his name stands first on both the list of thirty-seven and that of sixty-nine; he recd. land in the "first division," 1640 and '41; rep. S. in the General Court 1641-'5. He came to Mass. with his father in 1630; res. Cambridge 1631, and Ipswich 1635, then in Salis. ab. 12 years; and was a settled minister at Exeter, N. H., from ab. 1650 till his death, Feb. 10, 1682-3.
