Moses3 Stockbridge (John2,1) was born in Hampton, New Hampshire, 9 January 1687/8 (Hampton records 1:151), and was living in Lambstown (now Hardwick), Massachusetts, on 8 March 1734/5 when he sold all of his land there, 100 acres, to Stephen Griffith of Lambstown, for 153 (Worcester co deeds 7:8,9). On 25 October 1715, Moses married Phebe3 Russ, possibly in Andover, Massachusetts (Hebron CT VR 1:75). She was born in Andover, 20 April 1683, the daughter of John2 (John1) and Deborah Osgood) Russ (Andover VR 1:322 which incorrectly shows her mother as Rebekah). Moses served as a corporal in Captain David Pigeon's Company of New England Troops during "its being at Annapolis Royal," from 10 October 1710 to 24 January 1710/1. His brother John also served in this unit. In 1711 he was taxed in Newbury, Massachusetts. Moses was a cordwainer of Leicester, Massachusetts, when on 20 May 1716, for "a valuable Sum of money," he deeded to Samuel Goodsnow of Marlborough, yeoman, 200 acres in Leicester (Middlesex co deeds 19:48). On 11 December 1718, Moses Stockbridge, "formerly of ye Town of Lisester," for 14 08s., purchased 50 acres in Hebron from Nathaniel Dewey of Lebanon and Joseph Dewey of Hebron (Hebron deeds 1:175). He was described as a husbandman of Hebron on 14 January 1718/9 when he sold to John Ladd of Kingston, New Hampshire, "all ye Right title Claime . . . which I have or ought to have to ye Estate of my honoured father John Stockbridge of Hampton . . . Weaver Deceased" (NH province deeds 30:514,515). Moses sold his 50 acres in Hebron on 24 March 1723/4 to Joseph Swetland of Hebron and John Sprague, Jr., of Lebanon, for 56 and 100 acres in Windham. He sold the Windham property 4 February 1724/5 (Hebron deeds 1:351; Windham deeds F:123,124,215). He was still of Hebron when he was involved in a plea of abatement dated 9 June 1725 (Hartford 6:549). He soon returned to Leicester, where he was granted a 40-acre lot by the town proprietors on 8 December 1726 (Middlesex co deeds 29:329-331). Eight days later he was again of Hebron when he purchased two parces there, totalling 50 acres. On 16 August 1728, Moses Stockbridge of Hebron sold these 50 acres to Benjamin Lord of Norwich, for 110 (Hebron deeds 2:68,139). No further record of Moses or his wife has been found. Children 1717-22: Phebe, Mary, Moses. [ref 87:3-531]
