JOHN, Watertown, s. of William, brot. by his mo. at the age of 7, in the Francis from Ipswich, 1634, was a lieut. by first w. Abigail had 1654-aft 58: John, Elizabeth, Abigail, and ano. John; by sec. w. Sarah Nichols, m. at Charlestown 1664, wh. d. 14 Jan. 1688, aged 45, had bef 1669-80: Sarah, Hannah, Nathaniel, Samuel, and Hepzibah. Her mo. d. 14 Jan. 1689, and by third w. Prudence who surv. him, and d. Sept. 1711, prob. ano ch.; and he d. 22 Nov. 1709. He was the richest man in the town, selectman 1664, and often after. His will, dat. 4 days bef. his d. names w. Prudence, and s. John, four ds. with their hs. [ref 20]

Watertown 3 February 1653/4; in her will of 1 December 1660 Abigail Salter of Dedham, Essex, made a bequest to "Abigail Hammond, my daughter, of New England"; m. (2) Charlestown 2 March 166[3/]4 Sarah Nichols; m. (3) Rowley 7 November [1686?] Prudence (Wade) (Crosby) Cotton, daughter of Jonathan Wade and widow of Anthony Crosby and Seaborn Cotton. [ref 26]

Lieut. JOHN HAMMOND (son of William and Elizabeth), had two wives. 1st, SARAH, b. 1643, d. Jan. 14, 1688, aged 45, the mother of his chil., and he left a wid. PRUDENCE, who d. Sept. 1711, aged 74. His will was dated Nov. 18, Inventory dated Nov. 29, and Will proved Dec. 9, 1709. He d. Nov. 22, 1709, aged 85 years, 4 m., so the grave-stone; probably should be 82. Inventory �961.8. In 1690 his assessment was the largest in the town, and next his was that of William Bond, Esq. May 16, 1665, he was appointed guardian of his kinswoman, Mehitabel Hawkins. Children: John, Elizabeth, John, Abigail, Hannah, Sarah, Nathaniel, Samuel, Hepzibah [ref 77:269]
