Richard Abbott, adult 1658, lived at Kittery, later at Great Island; a blacksmith, he became armorer and gunner at the fort, and later Province jailer, the prison being in the fort. While in Maine he was grand juror, 1664, and was bondsman for Capt. John Davis in 1668. He was attorney for John Turner of London in contesting Tristram Harris's estate. No ch. by two wives, Elizabeth in 1676 and Mary, widow of Stephen Graffam, who was again a widow in 1712. [ref 22]

RICHARD ABBOTT although possibly identical with the one who came 1635, in the "Bonaventure," is first mentioned in the records at Portsmouth as having "subscribed" 10s. there, for the support of the minister, 1658. Old deeds mention two wives, Elizabeth, and wid. Mary Grafton; their maiden surnames are not known. He was granted by the town of Kittery, Me., 13 acs. of land June 13, 1659, in Crooked Lane, Kittery, which he afterwards sold to Walter Abbott, who gave it to his gr.-dau. Sarah Wills, with a house thereon. He was also granted by the town of Kittery 80 acs. of land Feb. 24, 1661/2; and 50 acs. Jan., 1673/4 (t. r.). He and his wife Elizabeth of Kittery, deeded 40 acs. of land there, on the 'Newgewnacke River near Port Wigwam, except certain pine timber land, Jan. 10, 1675/6, for �30, in [ref 69:1044] boards" at 40s. per thousand. They also bought 30 acs. with a house thereon, in Kittery near Quamphegan Falls, north of the Fort Hill, and 6 acs. of marsh, for �40, May 31, 1677. He was granted by Unity Parish, Kittery, 50 acs. June 24, 1673.?? His "rate" at Great Island (now Newcastle, N. H.), in 1677, was 6s.: 6d., and in 1681, it was 13s. He was prison-keeper at Newcastle 1680-1-2-3-4-5-6-7, etc., and received, 1680, for his services per year, �4. There is no town or ch. rec. of any of his chil. if he had any, nor are any mentioned in old deeds in a way by which they can be identified. There is no rec. of a will by him, if any was made, nor anything to identify him as a bro. of Walter Abbott of Portsmouth, in case he was. [ref 69:1045]

"Mary Abbott alias Graffton or Graffam, wid. of Richard Abbott and Stephen M. Graffton, of the Island of Newcastle, N. H., spinster," of Portsmouth, deeded 20 acs. of land she had owned for 50 yrs. to son, Caleb Grafton at Newcastle, for the benefit of another son, Stephen Grafton, Dec. 18, 1712. [ref 69:1045]
