Capt. John, son of James Heard, married (1) 27 April 1690, Phebe Littlefield, who died 4 July 1697, (2) 2 July 1698, Jane, dau. of Nicholas Cole and widow of Joseph Littlefield, (3) Dec. 1725, Ann Wingate, (4) Maria Bradbury of York. Pub. 27 Nov. 1735. His will, dated 15 Jan. 1739, was probated 6 Jan. 1752. [ref 33:511] While out in the woods he was discovered by several Indians. He at once fled and the Indians pursued. Heard knew of an old hollow log in the woods, which he gained unperceived by the Indians, having killed his dog that he might not be betrayed. There he lay concealed. The Indians in their pursuit came and sat down on the log for rest. Heard listened to their conversation and heard them threaten what they would do to John Heard if they should catch him. He had previously distinguised himself in the Indian wars. In due time he emerged from his hiding place and returned home in safety. [ref 33:169] John Heard of Dover has been confused by some with John Heard of Kittery. The former lived at Cochecho and m. Elizabeth, dau. of Rev. Joseph Hull and died 17 Jan. 1688. Children by first wife: Dorcas, Phebe, Shuah, James; by second wife: Jane, Mary, Abigail. [ref 33:511]

JOHN3 HEARD (James2, John1), b. about 1667, was Captain John Heard, and lived at Kittery. He married Phoebe ___. On Sunday, July 4, 1697, Indians attacked John and Phoebe Heard and others who were returning from "the meeting house in the Parish of Unity, in the Precinct of Berwick, where they had attended divine service". Phoebe Heard was wounded and fell from her horse. She begged her husband to leave her and save the children at home. He was wounded, but escaped. Phoebe Heard, Major Charles Frost and Dennis Downing were killed. The spot where this tragedy occurred, now called Ambush Rock, in that part of Kittery now Eliot, is marked by a bronze tablet. A marker also is seen at the grave of Phoebe Heard in the old burying ground upon the farm in Eliot belonging to the heirs of Sulvester Bartlett. John Heard married (2nd) July 2, 1698, Jane, daughter of Nicholas Cole of Wells and widow of Joseph Littlefield; married (3rd) Dec., 1725, Anne Wingate of Dover. Children of Captain John Heard are: Dorcas, Phoebe, Shuah, James, Jane, Mary, Abigail. [ref 64:65]
