JOB3 CLEMENTS (Job2, Robert1), born in Haverhill, Mass., 17 Apr. 1648, died in Dover, N. H., between 8 Oct. and 3 Dec. 1716. He married in Dover, 28 Feb. 1688-9, Abigail Heard, born in Kettery, Me., died in Dover after 23 Apr. 1734, daughter of James and Shuah (Conley*) Heard. [ref 88:62] Job3 Clements was the only surviving son of Job2 Clements and in 1682, inherited nearly all of his father's property. He was probably the wealthiest bachelor in Dover when he married about six years later. Besides his direct inheritance from his father and the property which he had received from the estate of his grandfather, his holdings were further enlarged by an additional grant from the town of Dover in 1694. On the 25 June 1678, Job Clements served on the Jury of Trials and on, 7 June, and, 6 Dec. 1681, he was a member of the Grand Jury. He served on the jury in the trial of Edmund Gove in Feb. 1682-3. On the 12 of May 1684, Edward Cranfield, the Colonial Governor of the Province of New Hampshire, sued Richard Martin, the Colonial Treasurer, for a debt owed him by the Province. All of the Councillors were summoned to Court to represent the Province. From the fact that Job3 Clements was called into the case as the "executor of Job Clements, late of said Council deceased (Province Papers, 1:503), it is evident that the debt was incurred before the death of his father in 1682. About a year later, Job3 Clements signed a petition, with other prominent inhabitants of Dover, against Governor Cranfield. In 1692-3, he was elected a representative, but with Elias Stephens and Samuel Keeas he refused to take the prescribed oath, objecting to its form, and later the records tell that:-- "At a General Assembly held at Portsmouth 1692 Wheras several persons elected for the Assembly have this day refused to take the Oaths appointed by the act of Parliament instead of the Oaths of allegiance and [ref 88:63] Supremacy, according to the custom of England by swearing upon a Bible: It is ordered that the oaths be administered to those that have so refused, by lifting up of hands, considering the present troubles & circumstances of affairs. Mr. Job Clements with others was so sworn by Nathan Fryer and Richard Waldron, Esq." Job Clements was again elected a Representative and signed the Test in 1693. He served on a commission of Highways for the Province, 17 May 1694. He evidently resigned his seat in the General Assembly before 16 Sept. 1696, for we find it voting on that date, "that the Honourable, the Lieutenant-Governor would send out warrants to make choice of men in the room of Mr. Pickering and Mr. Clements." Job Clements administered the estate of his wife's father, James Heard, 16 May 1695, and on the 6 Oct. 1699, he witnessed the will of Philip Cromwell, the husband of his step-sister, Elizabeth (Leighton) Cromwell. Children: Job, James, John, Margaret, Daniel, Abigail. [ref 88:64]
