[ref 22] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JOHN4 CLEMENTS (Job3, Job2, Robert1), born in Dover, N. H., about 1696, died there after 1747. He married about 1725, Sarah Bunker, born in Durham, N. H., 7 Dec. 1702, died, probably in Dover, between 1786 and 1790, daughter of Joseph Bunker. John Clements received from his father one hundred acres of land in Cochecho woods, and later was a proprietor in Rochester, N. H. On the 29 Aug. 1721, he witnessed the will of Ebenezer Wallingford of Dover, and [ref 88:94] in 1741 his name appears on a counterpin of Cochecho Parish, Dover. He was a member of the Second Foot Company of Dover, 24 July 1740, and was a soldier in the French and Indian Wars, in 1755, joining for Crown Point and later re-enlisting. [ref 88:95] John Clements left no Will, neither was there any administration of his estate nor any division of his property until 1812, when the following paper was filed in Court: "A warrant issued to Moses Wingate, Andrew Torr and Jotham Nute, Esquires, Tobias Tuttle, trader, and William K. Anderson, Esquire, appointing them a committee to make division and partition of certain tracts of land lying in the County of Strafford to and among Thomas Clements, Aaron Varney, and others, who made return as follows." "Strafford ss. Persuant to an order from the Honble John Mooney Esquire Judge of Probate of Wills &c in and for the County of Strafford, we the subscribers have made division and partition in and of certain tracts of land lying and being in the town of Dover in said County known by the name of Clements land to and among the heirs and owners of said land as follows namely. We have set off First--To Thomas Clement about thirty-nine acres of land in two pieces the first contains about thirty-eight acres lying in the Whortleberry swamp, so called, bounded as follows, beginning at the northeasterly corner of Anna Pinkham's land by Fore River, then running north eighty four degrees west by Anna Pinkham's land to Piscataway River thence ... to Fore River, etc. The second piece contains one acre and lies on the west side of Back River on Clements Point so called bounded ... on an acre of land herein set off to Timothy Clements and by Pinkham's land.... Secondly To Aaron Varney of Milton and Anna his wife in the right of the said Anna about eleven acres of land in two pieces, the first lies on Whortleberry hill in said Dover, bounded ... southwesterly corner of David Roberts' land by the back road leading from Dover ferry ... to and of Aaron Varney ... and contains about eight & half acres. The second piece contains about two and half acres, lying on the west side of [ref 88:95] Back River on Clements point ... beginning at Emerson's Creek to Pinkham's land ... to land herein set off to Francis Nute.... To Francis Nute of Milton and Mary his wife in the right of said Mary about seven acres and a quarter of an an acre of land on the aforesaid Clements point, bounded, ... by land of Aaron Varney ... to land herein set off to James Thomas.... Eliots land ... land of Thomas Card ... to Ford's land ... to land set off to Joseph Clement ... the third piece contains an acre of land situate on the aforesaid Clements point, bounded ... land herein set off to Thomas Clements on said point ... to Pinkham's land ... to Thomas Clements.... Sixthly--To Joseph Clements about seven acres and twenty-four square rods of land in two pieces, the first piece is part of the homestead aforesaid contains five acres and twenty-four square rods bounded ... Thomas Henderson ... Timothy Clements.... The second piece contains two acres and situate on the Captains Hill, so called bounded ... Timothy Clements ... Ford's land ... And the said Joseph Clements and Timothy Clements to have and improve the buildings on the homestead in common as before the division and also that each and every of the parties herein mentioned have they their heirs and assigns the privilege of passing and repassing through each others land as herein set off when necessary in the usual pass way." Allowed 30 Apr. 1812 (Strafford co probate 15:151). There is also in the Strafford County Probate Files the record of a division of property at Dover point to the legal owners of the same. (Ibid. 4:172.) These owners and their proportions, were widow Temperance Knight, two shares; widow Elizabeth Henderson, four shares; heirs of Ephraim Tibbetts late of Dover, dec'd, claimed by Joseph Roberts, one share; Anna Pinkham, one-half share; heirs of Job Clements, late of Dover, dec'd, five shares; to Peter Hunt of Portsmouth and Henry Trefethen of Kittery, twelve shares; to heirs of Ephraim Tibbetts, dec'd, claimed by John Tuttle, one-half share, 10 Apr. 1793. [ref 88:96] The bounds of land in the division of John Clements's property show that it was in the same locality as the property referred to in the above division so it was probably John's father who is called "Job Clements, late of Dover, dec'd," in this partition of property in 1793. It is evident that Anna Varney, Mary Nute, and Abigail Thomas were the heirs of John5 Clements, son of John4 and Sarah (Bunker) Clements. Children, born probably in Dover abt 1730-47: Joseph, John, Timothy, Thomas. [ref 88:97] John Clements and wife Sarah, of Dover, convey, to Thomas Millett of Dover, land in Rochester, 10 Mar. 1729-30 (Rockingham co deeds 101:388). [ref 88:95] John Clements of Dover conveys, to Noell Cross of Dover, land in Dover, 16 Aug. 1734 (Province NH deeds 21:53.). [ref 88:95] John Clements of Dover, brother of Job, son of Job and Abigail, and grandson of Job Clements, with Sarah his wife, conveys, to John Horn, brother of William Hern, of Dover, land in Dover. 25 July 1738 (Ibid. 23:400).
