RICHARD, Charlestown 1633, butcher, freem. 4 Mar. 1635, by w. Esther, d. of Samuel Ward, had Hannah, John, Joseph, Samuel, Nathaniel, Jonathan. Perhaps we may doubt the ch. rec. of Budington, 247, of the date, 25 July 1633, giv. the. adm. of "Richard Kettle and Esther his w." as a modern interpolat. in its latter clause, bec. the Boston ch. rec. of 26 Jan. 1634 has this entry, "Esther Ward, our br. Atherton Hough's maid serv." for evid. of her adm. and the dism. on 17 July 1642 reads, "Our sis. Esther Ward, now w. to Richard Kettle of Charlestown hath letter of recommenda. gr. unto her to the ch. at C." Possib. he had two ws. nam. Esther, hut it is less prob. than that the Charlestown ch. rec. was enrich. with a postlimin. addit. It must always be rememb. that we have not orig. ch. rec. of early yrs. in either Boston or Charlestown ch. but only copies, made prob. betw. 1650 and 1670, of both. He was usually call. serg. and d. 28 June 1681*, aged 71. Esther, his w. d. 2 or 5 July 1679. [ref 20]

On 30 December 1638 had 1 cow commons in the stinted common, "three-quarters he bought of Edw(ar)d Jones" (ChTR 42).

In the Charlestown Book of Possessions "Richard Ketle" had six parcels, comprising the usual sequence of grants: house with garden plot, containing half an acre; 3 acres arable; one and a half milk cow commons; two 5 acre woodland lots in Mystic Field; 20 acres in Water Field (ChBOP 60).

In his will, dated 13 May 1680 and probated 5 October 1680, "Richard Kettle of Charlestowne" bequeathed to "my son Jno. ("which last five legacies to be paid out of my moveables"); "my sons Joseph & Samuell joint executors" (MPR 5:136-37).

The inventory of the estate of "Sergeant Richard Kettle deceased," taken 12 July 1680, totalled 299 10s. 6d., of which 231 was real estate: "3 acres of land in West Field by Tho(mas) Pierce's," 15; "two acres of marsh by the mill pond," 11; "four cow commons and a quarter," 25 10s.; "four woodlots," 24; "seven haylots by Rich(ard) Stower," 40; "2 acres in the East Field," 40; "the dwelling house & yard & garden," 60; and the slaughterhouse (8 10s.), the barn (7) with the ground belonging to each" (MPR 5:137-38).

BIRTH: By about 1614 (deposed on 25 January 1674(/5) "aged about sixty years" (MLR 12:408)).

MARRIAGE: By 1637 Esther Ward; on 26 January 1633/4 "Esther Ward our brother Atherton Haulghe's maid servant" was admitted to Boston church (BChR 18); on 17 July 1642 "Our sister Hester Ward now wife to Richard Kettle of Charlestown hath letters of recommendation granted unto her to the church at Charlestown" (BChR 37); "Ester Kettle, wife of Richard Kettle" died at Charlestown 2 July 1679 (ChVR 1:105). (Although Savage clarifies matters by questioning the previously suggested marriage date for this couple, he also obscures this marriage by calling Esther daughter of Samuel Ward, although there is no man of that name in New England available to be her father at this early date (Savage 3:15).)

CHILDREN: Hannah, John, Joseph, Samuel, Nathaniel, Jonathan.

COMMENTS: Richard Kettle was admitted an inhabitant of Charlestown in November 1633 (ChTR 9). He appears in the lists of Charlestown inhabitants dated 9 January 1633/4 and January 1635/6 (ChTR 10, 15). He signed the agreement establishing the office of selectman in Charlestown, 10 February 1634/5 (ChTR 13), and was warned of encroaching on the common, 1 May 1637 (ChTR 28).
