| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - William Adams, b. 1650, May 27, at Ipswich. His father and grandfather were both named William, the latter having come to America about 1628 and located at Cambridge, but soon removed to Ipswich. The William who married Mary Manning graduated at Harvard in 1671, became a minister and was ordained pastor at Dedham in 1673. A contemporary ranked him "among the choicest of the ripe fruit of this young generation." As a scholar and theologian he held high place, and as a man he was amiable. He had kept a journal of passing events, and in its pages he paid his wife this tribute: "My dear and loving wife departed this life after we had been married 4 years and 8 months, whereby I am bereaved of a sweet and pleasant companion and left in a very lonely and solitary condition." He m. (2d) Alice, daughter of Maj. William, and granddaughter of Governor William Bradford, by whom he had other children; and he d. 1685, Aug. 17, after 12 years service as pastor at Dedham. Alice, d. of William Bradford the sec. had Elizabeth b. 23 Feb. 1681; Alice, 3 Apr. 1682; William, 17 Dec. 1683; and posthum. d. Abiel, 15 Dec. 1685. He had preach. at Boston the Gen. Elect. sermon 27 May preced. and d. 17 Aug. next. Judge Sewall informs us, that he attend. the funeral, and that prayers were public. offer. then for the first time in N. E. on such an occasion. WILLIAM ADAMS (3), of Dedham, Mass., son William (2), grandson of William (1), was born at Ipswich, Mass., 27th May, 1650; graduated at Harvard College 1671, ordained 3d Dec., 1673; married, 21st Oct., 1674, Mary, daughter of William Manning, of Cambridge. The wife of Rev. William Adams died 24th June, 1679, and he married secondly, 27th March, 1680, Alice, daughter of William Bradford, of Plymouth; he was settled at Dedham, 1673 to 1685, and was the second minister of that town; he died 17th Aug., 1685; he had preached at Boston, the Gen. Elect. sermon, 27th May preceding. His widow became the second wife of Major James Fitch, of Norwich, Conn. Children of William and Mary: Mary, Eliphalet, William. (2d), Mar. 29, 1680, ALICE BRADFORD, dr. of Major William and Alice (Richards) Bradford, and a granddr. of Gov. William Bradford. He d. Aug. 17, 1685, and his wid. m. Major James Fitch, of Norwich, who d. in Canterbury, Conn., in 1727, aged 80. Children with Mary: Mary, Eliphalet, William; by Alice 1681-85: Elizabeth, Alice, William, Abiel. Alice Bradford married, March 29, 1680, Rev. William Adams, the 2d minister of Dedham, being his 2d wife; Mary Manning of Cambridge was his first. Mr. Adams, by his wife Alice, had three daughters 1681-85: Elizabeth, Alice and Abiel.
