THOMAS b. about 1633; m. Temperance ___; d. before 25 Aug. 1697. Thomas Fernald made a deposition 18 April 1679, giving his age as "46 about." In 1645 Puddington's Islands were leased to him by the agent of Sir Ferdinando Gorges, and in 1671, he deeded one of them to his brother William, "for the fulfilling of the last Will of our Dere father, Renald Firnild." He was a shipbuilder. His inventory was returned 25 Aug. 1697. The larger of his two islands, afterwards known as Seavey's Island, was divided by his widow 20 Nov. 1702, among the surviving children. 3 May 1645 Thomas received lease of Puddington's Island: "Richard Vines, acting as agent for Sir Ferdinando Gorges, gave a perpetual lease of the islands to Thomas, son of Renald Fernald. The rent was two shillings and six pence yearly. The lease was practically a gift to the twelve-year-old son of Dr. Fernald for his father's sake. Thomas Fernald, 9 Sept. 1671, deeded the island next to the mainland to his brother William. This was then called "Lay Clayme" island, perhaps because Purington had laid claim to it." [ref 33:218;375]

Thomas2 Fernald (Renald1) was born in England about 1633 as in a deposition which he made on April 18, 1679 was given as about forty-six. He married about 1660 Temperance Hunking, daughter of Mark Hunking, the Little Harbor shipwright from whom he possibly learned his trade. The Hunking homestead and shipyard, descending to Temperance Fernald's neice, Sarah Hunking, who married Gov. John Wentworth, became the historic Wentworth estate. Fernald died in 1697, and his widow was still living in 1714. When Thomas was only twelve years old, on May 3, 1645, "Richard Vines, Steward General of the Province of Mayne" granted to "Thos: Furnell the Sonn of Renald Furnell of Piscataqua River Chieurgion for & in Behalfe of Sir Fardinando Gorges . . . Two Islands lying & being on the North East Side of Pischataqua River aforsaid commonly called of known by the name of Puddingtons Islands,: at a yearly rent of 2s. 6d." In 1671, "for the fullfilling of the last Will of our Dere father Renald Firnild, deceased," Thomas and Temperance Fernald granted to their brother William Fernald of Kittery, shipwright, the smaller of the two islands, "which sayd Ysland is Commanly Called or knowne by the name of Lay Claime," William and his successors to pay to the lord proprietor the just proportion of the ground rent if demanded, which it probably never was. Thomas Furnall was a signer of the futile petition of 1680 initiated by Majoy Nicholas Shapleigh asking that Maine be placed under royal authority again, in spite of the fact that the Bay Colony had bought the Gorges patent. He did not inherit their father's interest or responsibility in governmental affairs. Possibly the shipyards claimed all of his energies. Elected to the grand jury in 1685, Thomas failed to appear and was fined 18s.4d. An inventory of Thomas Fernald's estate was made on August 25, 1697, and a week later, on September 1, the children gave their mother a life estate in the property. The island was divided among the surviving children on Nov. 20, 1702, and again on December 19, 1702, they confirmed her life interest. Children: John, Patience, Thomas, Mary, Samuel, Joanna, Sarah, Hercules, Elizabeth, Anne. [ref 46:1-543]
