John, Portsmouth, b. Jan. 1671, was fortunate in his step-relatives and inlaws, Deering, MARTIN, and Hunking, whose dau. Sarah he m. 12 Oct. 1693, and that he and his alone of all the Wentworths, rose to great power to form what has been called the 'Wentworth political dynasty' may be ascribed to their guidance and influence. First a mariner, then merchant. In 1699 loading masts for Spain (Lt. Gov. Partridge owner) when Bellomont threatened to send both to England. for trial for treason. Councillor 14 Feb. 1711-2. Justice of the Ct. of Common Pleas 1713-18, appointed Lt. Gov. 7 Dec. 1717, holding this office until death, and having full control in N.H. 1723-28 when there was no Royal Governor here. Will 7 Aug. (d. 12 Dec.) 1730, left large est. to w. Sarah and ch. Her will, 20 Mar. 1740-1 (d. 1 Apr. 1741 in 68th yr.). Ch 1696-1719: Benning, Hunking, Hannah, Sarah, John, William, Mary, Samuel, Mark, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Ebenezer, Daniel, George.
