C. R. station, passed peacefully away, at a ripe old age. Benjamin Gilbert, one of the best known and most highly respected of the old pioneers of the county of Oxford. Mr. Gilbert apparently died of old age and although he lingered for some weeks, did not to all appearances suffer much pain. The deceased was born somewhere at the beginning of the century at Charlotteville in the neighboring county of Norfolk and was therefore considerably over eighty years of age. His father served against the American rebels in the Revolutionary War of 1776, and was one of that noble band of men -- the United Empire Loyalists -- who sacrificed their all for their attachment to the old flag. The deceased was always distinguished for his sturdy, unbending loyalty to the British Crown and like his father, was ready to seal his principles with his blood having served in the rebellion of 1837. He was a member of L. O. L. 254. One brother, two sisters and six children survive him. His funeral, which took place on Monday at St. Charles Church, Dereham, was attended by an immense concourse of teams of people and was one of the largest ever seen in Dereham. Rev. R. F. Dixon read the memorial service and at the request of the family spoke at the grave. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ||||||||||
