[ref 51] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FAWNE3 CLEMENTS (Robert2, Robert1), born in Haverhill, Mass., 2 Mar. 1661-2, died in Newbury, Mass., between 26 Mar. and 2 Apr. 1740. He married first, in Amesbury, Mass., 21 Nov. 1688, Sarah Hoyt, who died in 1712, daughter of John and Mary (Barnes) Hoyt. [ref 88:79] He married secondly, in Newbury, 7 Mar. 1718, Mrs. Dorothy (Carr) Frees. Although Fawne Clements was the fifth son of his parents, he was the eldest of the sons who remained in Essex county with their father, Robert2 Clements. His brothers, John, and Daniel, died as young men; his brothers Abraham, and Jonathan both left Massachusetts, and settled in other Provinces. From the records it is evident that his father, as well as the remainder of the family, regarded Fawne as the dominant member. His father provided for him liberally, and while he followed his trade of shipwright all of his life, the records show that he also dealt extensively in lands. There are recorded in the Essex county registry, seventy deeds of sale to or from Fawne Clements. It was to Fawne that the property of Luke Fawne was given and his father gave to him, also, in 1708, all his remaining real estate. Although he remained in Essex county, he did not stay in Haverhill. In 1688, he moved to Salisbury where he lived until 1692. Sometime before 1696, however, he settled in Newbury where he passed the rest of his life. On the 11 Mar. 1711, the town of Newbury voted that a committee should have power to let ye ship building yard near Watts Cellar to Col. Partridge, Mr. Clements, and Mr. Hodges on such terms as they may agree for. This was the Middle Shipyard. 16 May 1715, the following legal notice was posted: "Mr. Fawn Clements found a lot of ship lumber to ye number of about seventy sticks which are hewed and suitable for fuddocks and naval timbers and knees." 1 July 1724, Fawne Clements and Cutting Noyes of Newbury and Zachariah Fitch and Jacob Sheaf of Boston agreed to lay down a 2 rod way through their own land from Fish (now State) to Chandler's lane (Federal).
