[ref 22] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Joseph Chadbourne married, 14 Sept. 1739, Sarah, dau. of Thomas and Mary (Danforth) Phipps of Portsmouth. Children 1740-55: Joseph, Humphrey, Thomas, John, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Olive, Lucy. [ref 33:313] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JOSEPH 4 CHADBOURNE (Humphrey 3-2 William 1) called Captain; born about 1690; died by (nephew Benjamin appointed administrator) 18 Oct 1757 (YP); married Portsmouth 14 Sep 1738 (NEHGR 26:379) SARAH 3 PHIPPS, baptized Portsmouth 1 Apr 1716 (NHGR 4:100), living in 1766, daughter of Thomas 2 (Solomon 1) and (perhaps) Mary (Plaisted) (Hobbs) Phipps (LND, 550). He must be the Joseph who was active in surveying many areas, including the present town of Lebanon, plan of which was accepted by the General Court 24 Mar 1735. He also drew a lot in this town, as did a James Chadbourne. There is no evidence that they settled there, however (TR Books: Acton, Shapleigh, Parsonsfield, Newfield, and Lebanon). It is thought that his nephew Joseph lived for some time in Lebanon. While there has been considerable speculation that a generation was skipped since Joseph had his family late in life, the children are named in their uncle Humphrey's will as children of his brother Joseph, deceased. Children baptized Berwick First Church, surname CHADBOURNE: Joseph, Humphrey, Thomas, John, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Olive, Lucy. [ref 74:64] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ||||||||||
