They had Mary, Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Jethro, Barnabas, Eunice, Priscilla, Hepzibah, Ann and Paul. To wife Mary, housing and lands for life, and the rest of estate to her forever. To son Nathaniel, at death of mother, 3/8 of one share of lands on Nantucket, 1/2 acre bought of Stephen Greenleaf, on condition that he pay �30 towards performance of will. To son Jethro 7/8 share at decease of mother, 1 acre, also pay �30. To son Barnabas 1/2 share, of which 1/2 part is to him forever, other half for his natural life; but if he marry and have more than one child, then it is to be without conditions. If he has no issue, then 1/4 of the half to go to Jethro, and 3/4 to Nathaniel. Barnabas is also to have at his mother's decease, the house, barn and garden. To daughter Mary Gardner's children, 20s. To daughter Elizabeth Barnard's children, 5s. To daughters Eunice Gradner, Priscilla coleman and Hepzibah Hathaway, �20 each; of which Nathaniel shall pay Eunice �20, Priscilla �10. Mary was a leader in efforts to establish the Society of Friends on Nantucket Mary was a most extraordinary woman, taking part in public and town meetings and carrying much weight and authority there, and being consulted on all matters of public importance. John Richardson, an early Quaker preacher, says of her: "The islanders esteemed her as a Judge among them; for little of moment was done without her." She became interested Quakerism in 1701, and often had meetings at her house, being herself a preacher of power and eloquence. She wrote the Quarterly Epistles.
